Some years back I was doing some work on the engine of a Ford Anglia 105E which involved dropping the sump and taking the head off.

Was the 105E the side valve engine with the fuel pump above the exhaust?

No, it was the OHV engine, the side valve was in the 100E.

Recently, a friend, has been rebuilding an old Ariel motorcycle , I have been banned by the owner from his garage, as known for 'adding " nuts and bolts to his repair project.

Way back in about 1965my first bike was an Ariel Red Hunter 500 scrambler bike. I remember also seeing the Ariel 1200 in a bike shop. It was a big engine bike for that time and age.
