Hi Jo-anne,we have a 1997 Ford Maverick 2.7 TDI LWB 4x4 towing an Elddis 630fb Firestorm TA(1650kg) at 87% of kerbweight. Never measured MPG but it's not excessive.

I use a TD5 Discovery to tow a Bailey Carolina that has be upgraded to 1800kg. As you would guess it tows with ease. Gives 31mpg solo and 26+ towing.

Also very good at pulling mondeo's with a caravan attached out of the mud!

We tow a Link 575 20 foot twin axle van at 100% of our 2 Litre Renault Laguna's tow capacity.

By using a whale tail wind deflector munted on the roof bars, I get a good 28 to 30 Mpg on unleaded while towing. If I forget to put the deflector on we drop to 22mpg.

Solo we get upto 47Mpg.

We can manage to cruise all day at 60mph on motorways and 50% of the time I can get into 5th gear. On the hills gear changes are quite important to co-ordinate but I'm not worried about chasing the stop watch.

used to have a discovery 300 tdi auto to tow my coachman laser it returned an average of 30 mpg and did not seem to change much whether solo or towing, i loved the disco but found that my galaxy was a better car for what i needed. we now own a seat alhambra which leaves the disco and a shogun i had for a short while standing as a tow car in all respects except 4 wheel drive but in 9 years i have only once needed pulling off a field and the owner had a tractor so its not worth the 4x4 route for me anymore, the alhambra towed my ace celebration 590 twin axle with ease and returned an average of 35 mpg towing and up to 55 mpg solo with a light foot, the car returns about the same with our new coachman vip single axle van.

The alhambra has a kerbweight of 1760 kgs and a max tow of 2000 kgs, we towed our ace at 1640 kgs and the coachman at round about the same as its a much heavier van in its miro than the ace. the car is 130 bhp as standard but mine is remapped to 172 bhp and just shy of 400 pound of torque, it has a 6 speed manual box and is obviousley diesel for economy and power.

Jo-anne,

We tow a Senator Oklahoma at around 1500kg with an Iszu 3.1 TD LWB and it does about 25 mpg towing and about 20 towing a two ton horse box.

I have found though that conditions and terrain affect towing drastically.

Into wind on a motorway will bring the figure below 20 but with a following wind at motorway speeds consumption will easily top 30. Mountains and hilly area use also consume lots of diesel but as my granny always said " you don't get owt for nowt" wch means if you are towing a heavey lump which is as aerodynamic as a brick then it will cost you!

We have a 2006 Besscarr Cameo 625GL MTPLM 1895Kg and we tow with a 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE.

We average out at about 23 mpg towing and about 26 solo. We will expect more mpg when then car gets a bit more "broken in"!

We changed to a Grand Cherokee earlier this year, we currently have a single axle Lexon, but upgraded the tug as we may change for a twin Delta in the future.

Bailey Senator Wyoming, usually loaded to around 1550kg + - 100kg. Towed with a Kia Sorento getting at least 25mpg, usually more on motorways. 5th gear is usable up hill and down dale as recently proved going to Losehill. Average 4x4, exceptional tow car.

I disagree, Not an average 4x4. its one of the few new designs that have real off road capability.

Did you know, I nearly paid for the top of the range Sorrento recently! I would have had it as well except the garage offered me 6K below bottom book for mine... I wonder where they make their money from?

paul, is your van a twin axel?. how does your touran 1.9 manage to tow a huge van of about 1700 when the maximum weight to tow with the touran is 1500 and the 85% is about 1200-1300. what the maximum weight you can put on that tow ball because them twin wheelers are about 100 and most mpv's are about 65-75 max?.

please let me know your secret cos id love a touran or mabe i got it wrong and you have a single axel?.

Bailey Senator Louisiana twin-axle towed by VW Touareg 3.0 V6 Sport TDi Auto.

Solo can get 35MPG on a clean motorway run and when towing it drops to around 20MPG because it has the power to pull away as if it was solo and trucks, vans and other vehicles don't slow me down...
