What van to tow an Ace Jubille twin axle?

Hi, I`m going into business soon (caravan servicing) And i must sell my much loved Isuzu Bighorn.I need a largish van to use for the business and to tow our caravan.

Dodgy van dealers around here say i must have rear wheel drive and at least a long wheelbase Transit , with a 2.2 diesel in at least.

None of the new van websites give tow weights of these vans.

Any one got any ideas??

At risk of receiving a torrent of challenges about this response, I would kind of expect anyone servicing my caravan to have a reasonable knowledge of the hobby, not least the mechanal aspects of towing, therefore I am surprised you cannot answer a relative basic question like this yourself.

Now for the helpful bit. The twin axle ace jubilee (Equerry) is 1601Kg MTPLM.

Assuming you are a relative novice then you should aim to stay close to the 85% rule, which you can find out about on this forum quite quickly, so you should look for a towcar weighing 1880kg which is quite hefty.

Diesel will serve you better than Petrol, as it has more torque.

Applying 90% which many would suggest is ok, puts you in Freelander 2 territory.

85% is not a rule. It is only a guideline. The use of the word rule imbues the figure with an unhealthy authority which it does not have.

I'm not sure why Martin is suggesting a Freelander rather than the van info you requested. As you say manufactureres don't quote max tow limits like they do for cars but the web sites/ brochures I looked at do quote maximum train weight (MTW) or maximum train mass (MTM). This is in rough terms the maximum limit of the weight of van, plus any payload you have, plus weight of trailer. e.g. transits tend to be 1700 to 2000 kg kerb weight, with a MTM around 3500 to 5300 depending on the model. The larger ones will easily cope with your caravan but you need to do a few sums.
