I have started this thread because I don't want to divert any other questions into what might be perceived as a hijack.

Most of us caravanners have shrewd idea of what our outfits towing ratio is.

I would be interested to know:-
What your towing ratio is?
And why you use this particular ratio?

I don't have an outfit yet as ive only just started learning the ropes of caravanning but I've come to a decision, that my outfit is going to be the kia sorento 2.2 AWD and the lunar lexon 640 RS 2008 model, It's an 83% towing ratio. I've come to this decision through the help guidance and advice of the PCv website forum and It's members. The Insurance grouping for the sorento is below average and the fuel consumption is also good, It has a 100kg noseweight on the towball {advise 80kg} And the caravan choice is fit for my needs as i have opted for extra space for the siblings in the family. I realise and understand that towing a van has legalities and laws which have not to be taken for granted, and I'm just very greatful i have this website to help and guide me through a whole new lifestyle. :)

My towing ratio is 79%.
Downsized from Vectra to Astra at beginning of year to minimise outlay in retirement (down from 2 to 1 car and OH didn't like driving the Vectra). Only have a 2-berth as no grandchildren. Astra road tax - zero first year and £20 a year thereafter. ;)

Our towing ratio is 89.5%.

We tow a 2013 Lunar Clubman SE with a Vauxhall Vivaro van, as we carry 5 dogs & we use it to camp when we compete in dog agility shows. The van is regularly pretty heavily loaded, as we have custom built steel cages permanently fitted & we carry food etc. for the dogs. so the actual ratio rather than the kerb/MTPLM is always a lot lower. Also the van punches a much bigger hole in the air than a car, so the aerodynamics & consequently the stability is quite different.

hi John,
Vauxhall Meriva 1.7cdti. 1442kg
Bailey Ranger 380/2. 1058kg
Noseweight 50kg
Towing Ratio 73%
the towing ratio is low only by coincidence. the 380 at a shipped length of 5.25mtrs is the longest I can get into the garage,
and the Meriva being a smallish MPV was the best utility vehicle I could find but still returns 60mpg solo,

When I was last into Caravaning and I bought a new Caravan it was not supplied with a towing ratio nor was one offered as an optional extra. I never did fit one and allways seemed to do quite well without so I am pleased to have saved whatever money one would have cost.

Hi
Volvo XC90 2155kg
Sterling Eccles t/a Trekker MTPLM 1805kg
83.76% match.

As I new the Volvo xc90 should be a great match for any van so as long as the MTPLM was under 2000kgs didn't bother doing a match until now.

cheers
John

some interesting results there for you Prof, so seeing as you started the thread ""What's yours""

88% for a caravan. But its 117% for a large box trailer, 44% for a camping trailer, and only 10% for a garden trailer!

I don't load to achieve a particular ratio.

Mazda 6 and Quasar 465 which according to the CC figures is 86% which seems OK to me. I did try another site that told me that was dangerous but I am not convinced.

Skoda Octavia Estate 4x4 and Sprite Alpine 4 ratio 82%.
It was 87% with previous car, then changed to the Octavia which has a higher mass in service, I do prefer to tow somewhere near the guidance.
