We have cars with Alloys and steel spares, the locking bolts are standard factory fit and for use on the steels.

Would a car manufacturer supply unsuitable bolts, I think not!

Hello there,just read your to comments on wheels falling off.I myself have worked at an alloy repair shop for 20 years.Reasons are quite simple. Wheels not tightened enough,wrong wheelnuts or wheels not sitting properly mounted on the hub meaning that if the centre bore of the wheel is bigger than that of the hub the wheel is depending on the 4 or 5 wheelnuts to centralise the wheel on the cones of the nuts which the wheel fitter may not catch on to. simple engineering

There are other designs but it's what's used commonly that's being discussed, I can't recall ever having other than straight tapered bolts/nuts, whether for steel or alloy, car or caravan.

It would though seem 17mm is now very common judging by the ratio of those for sale on the Internet.

Thinking about it my cheap wrench like many has a duel 17/19mm socket so it matters not what the head size is, more importantly though, the taper underneath will still be the same size regardless of the head size.

have'nt had a wheel come off (thankfully) I once had a tyre go badly out of shape and that was bad enough.
