Which Club?

Hi All

We're very new to caravanning and haven't bought a van yet but (after days of looking at the Internet and dealers) we've probably decided on an Eldis Avante 482. Phew!!! So I thought we should join a club, but which one? Are there any differences between the CC and the C&CC? Any help for a bewildered newbie would be appreciated.

John , I'm sure if you look in the "General" heading you'll find lots of discussion on this. We belong to both and have done for more than 10 years and find they are quite different both in their operation and their coverage of the country. I think that the CC have better toilet and shower blocks. However, the C&CC do family deals which can help cut costs for some and they also do an over 55 discount in low and medium season. That can make a few pounds of difference per night even if only one of a couple qualifies.

Enjoy your van when you buy it. We bought something cheap when we started but we were sure we'd like it as we'd borrowed my brother's van for a short break first.

I've copied this from the New Members section on behalf of Lynne.

Hi, We have just about finished renovating our 1993 mardon classique-looking good! Thinking about joining caravan club or camping and caravanning club. Any advice as to which would be best? Done loads of camping before but not yet been away with the van

Re: the Camping & Caravanning Club, the one bugbear I have (and the reason why I did not renew our membership) was that you cannot book an electric pitch for a Saturday night one night stay.

We both work, and the reason for having a caravan was for little trips away to spend some time as a family, rather than at home doing little jobs each weekend.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. As recommended, I had a long look down the General forum and now realise what a can of worm my question was. I guess I'll have to suck it and see.

Hi John

I realise it is some time since you put your message on, but if you are still on the lookout for a GREAT club to join, then look no further than The Elddis Owners Club. You can get all the details you need from www.elddisowners.co.uk.

Regards

Chris

Both clubs are excellent and the same cost. CC has more sites and more 5 van sites. CCC has a bigger list of approved sites. Both offer local centres, rallies etc. We are in both. The van is insured with one, the car with the other. We like the fact that CCC give us codgers a discount on site fees. To book a CCC site you have to pay a deposit. CC no deposit. However CC gets very booked up whereas CCC you can usually get a booking. Both have good technical advise and similar magazines.

We joined the Caravan Club when we first started caravanning and last year, to give us more choice of sites for a forthcoming holiday to Scotland, we also joined the C&CC.

We phoned C&CC to book a night stop at Moffat, to break our long journey north and were told they don't take one night bookings.

We stayed on excellent CC sites during our 5 week touring holiday, except for one week in June, which we had pre booked at the C&CC Rosemarkie site. This was our first experience of a C&CC Site - and it was our last.

The site itself was clean and well run, but we were awoken around 4.30 - 5.a.m. each morning to the noise of strimmers and grass cutting machinery used by the adjacent golf club. Our pitch was at the golf club end and the wardens heard it too and spoke with the golf club, but the noise continued each morning and marred our stay there and we have not renewed our membership.

We belong to both but only use the CLs and CSs without facilites and EHUs we also belong to our owners club, ACCEO and TCC. A friend once said the standards of facilities was generally higher on CC sites but that CCC had better locations, difficult for us to judge as don't use either very often.

You need to find out a little about your local clubs, even adjacent areas of the same club can have different priorities (probably the wrong word),

for instance our local CC centre has a large family orientaion where as surrounding centres seem less so.

We are only in the CC and find the rallies excellent.

You can use puptents for extra people but if you want to rally with friends or family who do not have a van or trailer tent it might be better to join the C&CC.

Good point about friends and family with a tent, had forgotten that but it can be very valid, especially in the summer. Our camping friends seem to give up in the winter!!
