Can anyone help i own a 97 disco which i have towed to france ,scotland, cornwall with no problems at all ( i must be lucky or picked a good one ). Now i am getting a little fed up with servicing and fuel costs. After 5 years of a bone shaker i need something a bit more refined .My caravan is a Abbey 417 with weight of 1440 gross (great van by the way ) The car diesel. Should i go for BMW 230d ,mondeo ghia x130,volvo v70 or something like rover 75 ZZT. My budget will be around £10-12.000

Hi Nigel,

We tow our new 6 berth bailey with the mondeo 130 estate. Just returned from a four week tour off the vendee, I can only but praise the car. It towed as steady as a rock and the self leveling suspension was a real bonus. The car was mostly in sixth gear with the cruse control set at 65, it was also comfortable in france at 75mph. excellent mpg 33-36 when towing. And that was when the car was also full with five people. I bought ours on a 54 plate with 5600 miles...

The Mondeo gets my vote as well. I tow a 2002 Sterling Eccles Jewel (MTPLM 1465kgs) behind a 2002 Mondeo LX 130bhp TDCi estate and it is great. My only (slight) moan is that I find the seats a bit uncomfortable on a long run.

Hello Nigel,

Have you considers one of the MPV's. (Galaxy/VW/Seat or Renault) These give you comfort running and serviceing very close to a car, generally a generous towing weight allowance and the height of a 4x4. You have a a modereatley heavy caravan so the the size of the MPV would help.

Hi Nigel

I must add my vote for the Mondeo. I have a 2.2 155 Ghia X estate which tows superb. Self levelling suspesion works great. just returned from 3 weeks Haute Provence was a pleasure to drive. Also residule values are not good so can pick up a bargain. I paid
