Hi all, we are due to swap our Sorento later this year,(we have had 2 and have been really pleased) we have a 1800kg twin axle van, what tow cars would you all recommend?

we quite fancied a Toureg, but some posts don't rate the engines!

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, thank you.

Andrew & Sally.

As you fancy one go for a test tow with a Toureg, but a 3.0 TDI auto; from what I know about the car itself and hear about that particular engine you will be impressed, very impressed.

We use a Disco3 and that is very good but it's bigger, dearer and a touch more utilitarian, not that the latter is unacceptable caravanning. John

I would look at one of the following 3

Mercedes ML 3.0 V6 CRD

Grand Cherokee 3.0 V6 CRD (Merc engine)

VW Toureg.

As the Toureg is your favoured choice give it a test drive and see how it feels, but give the others a try as well. We tow a t/a Delta with our Grand Cherokee and the V6 engine just purrs along with the van on the back holding the speed limit regardless of hills. There are several others out there including the Sorrento which will manage your van , but personally I prefer a V6 lump to a 4 and cylinder as the V engine produces so much torque (which is what you want for towing ) and it is well under stressed.

Hi,

I suspect you will get just about all suitable cars recommended by someone who ones of them. I have stuck with a local reliable dealer/make and now tow our 1900Kg with a Toyota Landcruiser, our second. It does everything and more that we need it for and I have found them to be totally reliable.

Good hunting.

might also want to consider a Nissan Pathfinder, have a towing limit of 3 tons. I pull my twin axel with one with ease.

The Pathfinder has a good engine and is loaded up with kit,my kids are 13 and 16 and sat with theirs knees by there chins as the rear seats are very close to the flat floor, not such a nice ride as the Toureg when solo.

As already said get the 3.0 diesel, stonking engine as the reports say "just the engine it was waiting for"

We own a series 5 Senator Wyoming, and we towed with a 5 litre V10 Touareg for just over a year. We've just swapped it for a 3 litre V6. The V10 was superb, my husband kept forgetting the caravan was on the back!! Only downside was the fuel consumption, average 20 mpg whilst towing, around 24mpg solo. This was the main reason for swapping to the V6, which we haven't tried towing with yet. It runs average of 30 mpg. Both are lovely cars to drive. We used to tow with a Nissan Terrano, but the Touareg is a much more luxurious car, especially for long journeys.

Hi Andrew & Sally

We too have a Toyota Landcruiser - our second in 5 years. Both have been Autos 5 doors 8 seaters with 3.0 D4-D engines. Old 51 Reg had 4 speed auto, current vehicle is 55 Reg 5 speed Auto with CC. We get 31mpg on a daily useage in Cornwall and 25/26 towing 1486kg Abbey, the 4 speed auto was only 1mpg worse than current car. Absolutely fault-free and enjoyable motoring for 5 years!!!!

Hi Andrew & Sally,

we also have the D4D engine with an auto box. It pulls our twin axle with ease and is a pleasure to drive. Good luck with whatever you decide upon.

Hi Andrew and Sally,

Just back from a snowy Easter. My presnt landcruiser is a 2004 diesel automatic. I also get about 30mpg general running around and 22ish towing (1900Kg) with bikes on roof. Previous was a manual Colorado, returned about the same but with lighter van. Personally I would now stick with the auto box, it makes towing so easy and consumption figures from Toyota are better for auto than manual. (I have owner Toyotas for 28years (6 vehicles, all used for towing), taken every one to over 100000miles and had one breakdown in that time). That's why I stick to Toyotas.

Good luck

Alan

Hi Alan and everyone else, thank you so much for all your help and comments, i have always been rather scepticle about towing with an auto, but you have all helped put my mind at rest, i feel confident now that we will be having a Land cruiser with a auto box!

Kind regards, have a lovely caravanning year! Andrew & Sally.

Loads of caravanners and reports on www.mytreg.com, a site dedicated to the VW Touareg.

After towing for a year with a 5L Touareg V10 TDI and coming close to a Landcruiser when we recently renewed the car, I can put my hand on my heart and say that I am so pleased that we decided to stick with VW, although dropping to a newer, but smaller 3L V6 TDI, the build quality and luxury spec outshines the Toyota (I love our second car, which is a Toyota so I'm not biased). Unless you actually need the 7 seats of the Landcruiser, the Touareg is an impressive piece of kit in every other respect.

I have to agree with the previous comments of Lara (Not just because she's my wife), but because the VW has made a lasting impression on me and unless Brown, Darling and Co., force me off the road altogether and back to the more polluting package holiday flights, I will be sticking with VW for the forseeable.

Good luck !
