We insure our twin axle Abbey Vogue with the Caravanning and Camping Club on their 'new for old' policy.

Our previous (brand new) caravan was written off in the 2007 floods after we'd owned it for just three months. The C&CC dealt with our claim quickly, courteously and very efficiently and they eased a very worrying situation for us.

The insured amount was paid without fuss and we have a replacement caravan.

The wording on their policy is clear and concise and we had no hesitation in continuing to insure with the C&CC on our replacement caravan. I have no connection to any company, I'm just a customer who has unfortunately had to make a claim.

Despite having claimed for a brand new caravan our insurance premium is

The corollary to your point is that Bernard should have self funded, ie not insured at all. His claim like most was painless. Not all Insurers , especially those we cannot mention will not give you a painless experience.

My caravan cost me the thick end of

Hi,

It depends on wether you have a T/A or a single,as insure my caravan and a few other companies will not insure T/A or indeed foreign vans.I myself am insured with NFU and two years ago had a total loss claim when my caravan was destroyed by fire, luckily I had a new for old policy and they paid out in just over a week and I would recommend N.F.U.

We insure with Caravan Guard, and we have been happy that any queries we have had have been answered by real people who appear to be UK based (through years of car insurance quotes, that is not always the case).

Some of the comments here amaze me.

I'd love to hear how well Insurers perform when the caravan is stolen or damaged.

Price may be important at inception , but believe me when it comes to a claim there can be a vast , vast , difference.

Like everything else in life you ony get what you pay for.

Gumbos idea on self insuring in a private syndicate just might be a possibility!

Cheers

I have used the CC for insurance for many years and have found them very good when I have had to make a claim.

On my last renewal I decided to give Towergate Bakers a try because the quote was a lot cheaper than the CC.

I have not had to make any claims as yet so I was wondering if anyone has had dealings with them and how well they responded to a claim.

your comment "Like everything else in life you only get what you pay for"

Not correct, the same product can be bought for less.

There is another saying "a fool and his money is easily parted".

Hi Ray

"Not correct, the same product can be bought for less.

There is another saying "a fool and his money is easily parted".

And yet another :There's no fool than an old fool.

The point is simple. When a claim, damage or theft occurs invariably the cheaper Insurer will seek to rely on the small print to repudiate IMO. There is no doubt in my mind the CC cover is wide and less demanding on security issues. Also in the event of a dispute they are likely to take a more tolerant view on policy liability , thanks to the influence of the CC.

I accept not all cheap Insurers are bad but I don't know a good one yet!

Note , we are not allowed by Mr Mods to mention some because they threaten to sue Lord Hezza if their their poor performance is discussed here. And yes they are cheaper than CC. QED.

Cheers

Greetings,

I have doing the annual trawl of Insurance Co.s recently in an effort to get good value.

My present caravan was bought at one year old (with good discount on new price) and one Company, after obtaining all the info. turned around and said that I couldn't have 'new for old' cover as I hadn't had the 'van from new.

As they saw it, in the event of a total write off I would be gaining and I wasn't allowed to do that.

This hasn't stopped several firms giving me quotes knowing that the 'van wasn't new when I bought it.

It begs the question."Would they pay me out in FULL in the event of a write off."

I will have to ask that question of the Co. I eventually choose.

We will have to agree, to disagree.

Over 40 years of driving, i have had 5 claims on the car insurance, all paid up, all were the cheapest.

As yet no claims for the van, but why should that be different.

Same with the house insurance, only had one disagreement, which ended in my favour. other than that over 35 years and 6 claims never had a problem, always got paid out, always go for a cheap quote, although with the house i like to go for a "name".

Hi Ray

I'd say you have been lucky. The Chief Financial Ombudsman, William Merrick CBE says in this years annual report that 6 out of 10 claims repudiated were incorrect. He therefore found in favour of the Insured. What concerns him and me is how many rejected claims never reach the Ombudsman because people do not have the knowledge how to deal with such issues.

I don't think we are in disagreement but I maintain the cheap Insurer will find a way to reject the claim , more so than the "more respectable" ones.

A few years ago there was a real hoo ha on this forum about a "Cheap" Insurer who never paid claims that better insurers may have done. It's a shame you can't access those threads but for legal reasons Mr Mods had to stop all discussions about that Insurer.

By all means go cheap with your caravan Insurer but please ensure you rigidly stick to ALL their small print and security requirements.

Cheers
