why so low tow on passat bluemotion

the passat is a 2.0 lt 110bhp ,i was looking at at max tow and was shocked at it being 1200kg.

when you look at the same car that isnt bluemotion with all the same weights and kerbweight the max pull is 1500 kg to 1800kg

the car cant be that much different

It seems strange that the UK VW website quotes 1200kg as the maximum towload for the BlueMotion whereas the German one states 1400kg for the same car. In both cases it is still lower than comparable models. I speculate that this is due to improvements to the aerodynamics of the BlueMotion having been achieved at least in part by reducing the airflow through the engine compartment. This could result in an engine cooling problem with higher towloads.

It might be to do with the gear ratio's. One of the requirements that set the car tow limit is its ability to do a hill start. Manufacturers are falling over themselves to make their cars emmit less c02 on the official test. The blue motion cars have different gear ratio's and other tweaks so they appear on paper to have a low c02 & high mpg. Real world driving is different. Think it was it 5th gear that tested a polo blue motion on a regular commute & found it less economical than a normal polo :-o

oh i wish it was 1400kg in uk,its on my company car list to replace my very good mondeo which has a max tow of 1800kg

i think.i pull a elddis 505l which has a max weight of 1475kg

which is way out of the vw.

hope the new vectra has better pulling power

It may be worth raising the issue with VW and asking them for an explanation for the difference. With a bit of luck you may find that it was a typo error in the UK data.
