X-trail - Turbo failures

Anyone know of any independent report/ support website detailing the frequency of turbo failures on Nissan X-Trails?

Seems to be frighteningly common (and expensive)and everywhere people leave reviews of the car it's always - lovely car, shame about the turbo!

Is it as frequent a problem as I think, or more the case that people don't write in to report on problem free motoring?

Try Honest Johns website - he has withdrawn his recomendation for the X Trail specifically because of the turbo failures on the 136 ps 2.2pi engine. It also states opinion on the causes.

The site gives a wealth of info on all the reliability aspects and the good points of the model also links to other relavent sites.

I think this site and the Whatcar reliability index should be essential reading before any potential purchase of a vehicle.

Trylooking on whatcar.com, read the comments by people who have had them. I looked at a X-trail for towing but that website put me off due to the fact that a common problem seemed to be the turbo on certain models. And when I visited the dealership that just put the nail in the coffin for the X-trail. I ended up going for a Kia Sportage, had it a year no problems at all.

I thought I ought to comment on the statements made previously.

Prior to buying my 2004 xtrail SVE (54 plate),as I always do with any major purchase

I read all the available road tests.

The engine fitted in the 2.2 134bhp xtrail is a Nissan engine. In late 2003 the engine was upgraded, both power and torque increased.

The chain cam engine had a fuel injection pressure increase. And a variable vane turbo was fitted, along with a intercooler.

The turbo may be Renault but the engine isn't.

The turbo failures as far as I know are mainly down to a faulty boost sensor, mine was changed during a recall.

its well known that the replacement turbos were refurbished, not new as you might expect?

According to the turbo specialist, this is a poor practise and often results in a replacement not working a tall, or failing soon after.

my car has covered 26k miles to date. Has never let me down and is a great all round car.

the intercooler started to leak oil in the first year (a drip), and a modified version was fitted ,and has not leaked since

the car is on original tyres and brakes, so I have no complaints.

as I have said in previous posts my local dealers have proved useless, I can only say if your dealer is in this category do not buy a xtrail.

Normally at four years old I look to change my car, I am struggling to find a car that improves on it.

another xtrail springs to mind but the new version has the 2l Renault engine, has poorer review vision, etc

I looked at the crv but found rear view vision poor, the boot smaller, and the car looks to my eyes ugly. Very disappointed with the Honda.

Also a view of the what car reliability site revealed engine misfire problems. So every car it seems has its problems.

Remember the vast majority of posts are always negative on such sites, I have never posted on any reliably forum because I have nothing to report.

I agree with much of what Ray says above but having had 3 XT 2.2 Nissan engined diesels and now the Sport 2.0 Renault engine 150bhp

I have to say that the new one is in a different league and with the sat nav, keyless entry and rear view camera its superb

I chose the 150 bhp as I felt that it would be powerful enough and I still feel that after returning from France this week and taking in a couple of 350 mile in a day tows. Also no intercooler to leak

It is very comfortable on long runs and the new engine is much quieter and smoother

The 2 layer boot is ideal for easy access to the tools etc

I have a couple of criticisms: a full size emergency no tow spare wheel and the rear suspension drops a lot under load(M A Ds on order!)

But so far 6500miles and no faults

The latest xtrail is 148bhp, i will have the rear-view cam on my next car, and wouldn't do without the satnav, not sure about the keyless entry.

Ray its 1995 cc as well if we are being accurate and has 190/G/KM of CO2 and produces 110kW max net power

The keyless entry comes as part of the Expedition pack with the Sat nav and rear view camera

It didn'y feature on my must have list but I wouldn't like to be without it now

You leave the key unit in your pocket and then you can open the door and start the engine

Its great when you are loaded up with shopping

But to return to the heading I didn't have any turbo trouble on the 3 other XTs but maybe its because I change the oil and filter and air filter more often than recommended
