xmas markets

If you want a short trip Lille takes some beating, forget Brugges which is quite small and congested.
If you feel like going further then consider the German markets which tend to be bigger and busier.
 
Why not try the Birmingham Christmas market? Plenty of exotic foreigners, incomprehensible language and the largest German market (outside of Germany)!

Get yourselves down the Rhine to Rudesheim, you will not regret it, its the best German Market by far, have been for the last 10 years and the drinks will be alot cheaper than any German Market you go to in the UK
 
I would not say Rudesheim is the best German Market. It is a fairly new affair to others in Germany. I can remember not many years ago going to their first one ever. Rudesheim is very commercialised catering for the Brits with fish and chips and tea like mother makes. The best ones we have visited over the last 30 years are on the Mosel Bernkastel-Kues and Cochem for small towns, Trier for a larger town. These are all excellent and very traditional. Out of the three I would choose Bernkastel as the town itself is beautiful, a fairy tale town, at any time of year. If you want to go further afield Rothenburg an der Tauber is another excellent market in another fairy tale town.
 
We've been going over to calais for a few years. Have done the belgium markets.
But not theGerman ones.

Ypres is good if mixed with the last post.. Brugge is ok but the market we didn't rate much. Gent was the best for a market. Lille when we went to us was totally boring. off to rome this weekend so may not do a market this year.
 
Well thats certainly put me in my place, I have travelled to Germany for the last 40 years and I am sure the Mayor of Rudesheim (who is a friend) will be pleased to hear and now see your comments on his lovely village. I am sure that you mean well, but I do not splash my holiday snaps all over the forum, although with respect your website does over some very sound advice. If we were all the same sit would be a very sad world.
 
That's got to be a first! A flare up on the overseas message board is a rarity indeed!

Living only few miles away from Rüdesheim I can only endorse Dianne's comments. There are so many xmas markets in Germany and Rüdesheim wouldn't be close to the top of my list.
 
Like I said earlier, if we were all the same what a weird world it would be, personely I like Rudesheim and I shall be there on the 7th December and obviously wont be seeing either you or Diane, I shall pass your regards on to the Mayor
 
Think you will find Asbach closed down now David , which I find very sad. But you can still get a lovely Rudesheimer Coffee.
