Hi All,

Don't know if this has been done before ..........

Do you remember when you bought your first car after passing your driving test.

I go back to 1968 when i passed my test on 2nd attempt in an austin 1100.I went out and bought a white hillman imp. I have fond memories of that little car, out tinkering about with her , putting on go faster stickers, buying headrests and seat covers , push button radio, etc.

Come on boys and girls, i am sure there is some fond memories you can tell us.

harry, I had a 1939 morris 8 in 1958 as my first car. The brakes failed after a couple of weeks.I couldn't afford the parts needed, so drove it for two months without footbrake, just using the handbrake!!It certainly improved my anticipation of other road users!

I passed my test first go in 1964 and had two years use of the firm's mini van with no expence what so ever to me. I bought my first car in 1966 - a 1959 lowline model Mkll Ford Zephyr Convertable reg. 615NTW. This was the actual car from the 1959 motor show and owned by Ford for a few years as a promotional vehicle. It was used in film work and actually driven by Elizabeth Taylor in one film. The car was Sunburst Yellow with a red power operated hood. Three speed steering column change with overdrive on top two gears. From then I got married and my choice of vehicles went down hill for a few years as we had to spend the money on the house etc. What would that Zephyr be worth now - I shudder to think? Still you win some you loose some. Never been able to afford to buy a brand new car so still have that thrill to come - probably never will be able to afford one nowadays.

I bought my first car before I even passed my driving test. I was dead certain I wouldn't fail first time but I did. By the time I got round to the second attempt, I already had a 1965 HA Viva.

Hi again,

What about all the mini owners , surely this was a popular first car.

In those days you could get under the bonnet change the plugs , points , condenser , leads .. oil + filter , in fact you could do a full service on your own , try and do that today, lift the bonnet and take one look and say "Bl**dy hell" .. garage job.

Hi everyone

I certainly recall my first car - Ford Escort 1100. I thought it was the 'bees knees' even though it was a pea green colour.

Rather rashly I asked my driving instructor to look out for a car for me prior to taking my test. Bless him! He came up trumps the week before. Said car in home garage - no turning back. Only the test to worry about! No pressure then.

Thankfully, I sailed through (as my instructor said I would - he was much more confident than me) first time. I was even congratulated on my driving ability by my examiner. Am I glad that driving came naturally to me.

Anyway, many more miles down the road (including touring France and Germany with a trailer tent) I am now allowed (by hubby) to take out the XC V70 ALW alone!!! Yes, I can hear you men saying "He must be mad!".

I have towed one of our former caravans, but only for a very short period. However, I am very willing to take on a longer run if necessary.

Although I have had many cars in the interveneing period I do remember my little Escort with much love and affection.

My first car was an 850 mini pickup, it was better than walking and my motocross bike went on the back but it was truly a horrid car, even with all new brakes & tyres it wouldn't stop and held the road like a pig on ice, just as well it was so slow. If mini's were supposed to have good roadholding compared to other cars of 1960 then driving in 1960 must have been a terrifying experience! but I guess people will say the same about now in 50 yrs.

mustard coloured austin allegro. more plastic padding than bodywork, they were terrible for rotting sills. Changing gear was like stirring porridge. But it stayed in one piece and upright in a very nasty accident on the M6 with a lorry. Loved it.

Hind sight is a wonderful thing - Zephyr convertable, Morris 1000 saloons, estates and convertables, Mini pichup, Ford Anglia, Austin Healey "Frogeye" Sprite, etc. If only we had these cars now they would be worth a hell of a lot more than the "banger" money that we paid for them at the time. Also as stated they were cars which the average person could work on for most jobs but nowadays open the bonnet and shut it again with despair.

Grahame from the wording of your posting am I right in assuming that you are of mature age? I am just turned 60 and have to admit that most of those years have been enjoyable, especially my younger school days. I think that the people of my age have had a more exciting up bringing than those of today who are stuck infront of a game boy or some other form of electronic game. We were outdoors playing, club house, etc. Never remember a wet summer holiday or ever saying to my parents that I was bored like my grand children say to me. Age is only relative - it is how the body feels and the mind thinks.
