I am presuming that you have one of these 13-pin-2-x-7 but you want one with longer cables ?.

How long are the cables on the one that you have got ?.

These from Towquipe are 1/2mtr long.

HI! if you only require a few extra inches on the cable, try getting under your van and you might find that the cable that is there might have some excess that you can pull through the cable clips that hold it onto the underside of your van . i have the opposite problem from you ,that my cable is to long after attaching my converter cable so just pulled some cable back under the van and attached a cable clip to hold the excess up underneath the van .

Worth a look .hope this helps

Agree with Damian. Any future caravan you buy is likely to have 13 pin plug. The short adaptors are OK but introduce two more joints per circuit - potential problems. The 13 pin plug and socket arrangement is far superior to the 7 pin - being less prone to corrosion, locking into place positively and being more water resistant.

Its a easy DIY job to fit a 13pin socket, you need a new plate and socket, remove the two fuses for the 12s socket first.

It is not that easy. I am assuming that you wish to retain the existing 2 cables and then you have to squeeze the 2 into the 13 pin socket. Yes, it can be done but it will be a lot of fun and probably lead to alot of interesting language, especially f you are lying undre the back of the tow car at the time. You will then find the grey socket you currently have has thicker wires than would be the case of you use 13 pin cable, so care needs to be taken. If possible replace the cable with proper 13 pin cable and then do the 13 pin socket. This means reconnecting the cable inside the tow vehicle.

It may be better to chicken out, hit the ATM and get a tow bar specialist to rewire it for you.

However, having used the adapters, first one way, and then the other due to changes in both car and van, I can state that touch wood I have never had any problem. Just keep the connecting pins clean and dry

my 13 pin has two cables to it, one a car specific, the other the standard grey cable, both go through a shroud.

YOU don't mention what the tow car is - this would be good information to know. Many manufacturers now make a 13 pin kit for post 2001 vehicles.

Assuming yours is not one of them there is a way but you have to be good with a soldering iron. Don't be tempted to use bodge-loks, they're simply awful and unreliable.

What you need is a 13 pin socket and about 6 feet of 13 pin cable. Wire up the socket according to the standards - the Towsure site has these in detail.

Then (after disconnecting the car battery) cut off the 2 7-pin sockets. Pull the 7 core cables back into the car and follow by pushing the 13 core cable up in their place.

then replace each wire, one at a time until complete. Solder and insulate each one well and it will last forever.

Tedious, yes. Worthwhile? Definitely.

Those converter leads are nothing but a royal pain and they will get snagged sooner of later. Bite the bullet and convert the car.

You might also be interested in a 13>7 solid converter in case you ever have to tow a small trailer or similar. This is an example but they can be found cheaper. I keep one of these in the glovebox for such emergencies.

If you want to go down the 13pin rout, this would be the best option as the socket is pre wired....

And connect as per drawing:

Again the type of tow car is not mentioned but many manufactuers supply a 13 pin socket and wiring fitted with a plug that can be more easily connected up in side the boot.

My only warning is that if the tow vehicle has any modern systems where actual core wiring is not used, then be careful what you are soldering.

My own 'mis match' is that the car is 13 pin but the new (2005)EU caravan had the original 13 pin system changed by the dealer to 2 7 pin set ups to suit the majority of the UK market. Yes, I can change it back again but cannot be bothered at this time in life. The adaptors have worked fine for the last 4 years.

Dedicated 13pin plug-n-play wiring looms are available from 2004 for Discovery III.

The earlier discovery is whatever you wish to make them.....

If it's a Disco 3 then you can change the back half of the towing loom without having to replace all the fuses etc in the NSR cubby hole. 20 minute job tops. Genuine LR part available and well worth the money as it's all plug & play.
