If i remember correctly the LR freelander pre freelander 2 wasnt great in crash either, does depend where they are hit.

I wouldnt read too much into it they dont give the ncap ratings out for nothing it has to be pretty safe to get a rating of 4.

I have seen some top marque cars cut open in order to rescue/free occupants.

Often, more crush means less injury for the occupants as the crushing process absorbs more energy.

Two cars colliding never gives "equal" damage - even official test at MIRA etc need to be mm perfect to get any usable data.

Why would a "new" Santa Fe have been repaired?

Our friend has worked in the Auto trade all his life and knows a thing or two about cars and accidents.

In a near straight head on collision what would anyone expect when getting hit by a car thats about 600kg heavier.

These days we expect cars to crumple, but for the occupants of the heavier 4X4 car all to be injured?

It is not so much a question of how much or how little overall damage was done to the car that determines whether the occupants remain uninjured or not, but where the damage has occurred. Ideally, in the case of a front end accident, that part ahead of the engine should absorb as much energy as possible before the passenger compartment is deformed. Also, in the case in question, we are not told whether the Santa Fe was hit head on, at an angle or from the side. Without a complete analysis of the accident it would not be correct to assume that just because the occupants of the Santa Fe were injured and those of the other car not, that the Santa Fe is necessarily any less safe.

Why introduce a scare issue into a topic which was quite interesting about the Santa Fe and tow weights etc. At any time this will develop in a comparision of what crash damage we have seen to a wide number of cars. As Lutz says unless we know the full details of this particular incident we can't make a judgement. Please keep to the topic

This sort of thing happens on virtually ever topic, its annoying, but stopping it from happening is like holding back the sea

Why do some people think of BMW as the holy grail? Would you believe that some people think of them as being over rated over priced with and with a very mediocre reliability record .They also look very boring.

I'd thought about this concern over safety of the SF. I wonder whether the vehicle involved in this crash was an older Mk2, not the newest releaase. As far as I can see, the latest car has only just been released within the past month and there are 59 plate cars of the previous incantation on the road.

That was a Euro NCAP 4 rated car, not the 5 star rating of the newer car. Just hypothosis I know, but fully feasable.

Back to the main thread. It is a great car, and as far as I can see, very good value. I'm still undecided whether to buy one now or hang on for a month or two until a towbar is readily available.

Dave.

Well I'm sorry but I've nothing against Hyundai and I'm no lover of the 1 series.

I only mentioned this as the Hyundai performed so badly and raised concerns locally. The lady driver is also a local and had replaced the car as her previous older one had been in another crash with her husband driving.

Apparently it had been touch and go as to it being a right off as that had also folded up in what wasn't considered not to be a big accident.

Not a lucky family obviously.

For me I ordered my new Santa Fe Style last friday from my local dealer in Stafford and it arrived 8 days later. Mine was in black, collect it on Monday.
