4x4 road tax help

sorry if I am raising an old issue. I have dropped the idea of a mondeo and looking instead at a P reg long wheel base shogun 2.8 to pull my Hobby 540 excellent.

Someone mentioned road tax is or may be going up to penalise 4x4.

Can anyone be a bit more specific than that for me before I buy. It is only costing £4k but don't want to be hammered then on tax.

Hi Philip, rest assured, the Govt will be increasing tax at some stage. They will use the 4x4 argument as an excuse, but in reality will be taxing any car that is capable of pulling your van safely. So, go buy that 4x4, there's no way round it, you'll be paying for it regardless.

cliff, sorry mate, but your argument is not neccesarilly true. phillip could find in trouble with whatever s/h vehicle he buys. It's the luck of the draw. Like patey's comment, I drive a 12 year old Range Rover, and my costs are perfectly manageable. As for the road tax, then if a few quid is such a serious problem, buy a bike!!! I paid

Cliff, surely buying any s/h vehicle is a gamble. I accept your argument re the complexity of a 4x4,but the forum's own LMH(lisa) had major problems with a fairly new Mondeo, which, I believe led to her virtually scrapping the car because the potential repair bill was so horendous.There is also the possible argument that, because of it's complexity, the 4x4 might be better built. I have only ever had one new car, and the depreciation on that was greater than the repair bills on the next three three 4x4s, all bought at between six and eight years old, and kept for four years.Buying s/h is very much a lottery, but I would have no hesitation in buying Philp's proposed vehicle, except that I'm a staunch Range Rover fan!!!

Philip, your topic has raised a good debate, has it not? But you're probably no wiser now than when we started!! In short, the tax burden would, percentage-wise, be very slight. Any major changes will be brought in over a fairly long period, and will affect any car capable of towing your Hobby. Go ahead, buy the 4x4 and enjoy it!!
