I once had a problem with my bank debit card. It was refused twice in a shop at Potters Heigham. I then paid cash. We then went in to the Tesco in Hunstanton to withdraw cash and the card was inserted and then a notice came up to contact the bank. After a while I got through to the bank and I was asked if I was in Montreal. Obviously a big "No" I'm in Hunstanton. So the bank said they would cancel the card and post us new ones. So we had to use credit cards for the rest of the holiday and if cash was required paid the CC interest too. The bank refunded my account the illegal withdrawals It later turned out that the local petrol station had a scam sales card reader when payment was made and the card was copied and details quickly made available to crooks overseas. It seemed a number of users of that petrol station had been scammed and that was before contactless it was chip and PIN.

Using a card I do not need fingerprint, facial recognition or a PIN.

Which is precisely why card payment is less secure.

As I pick my phone out of my pocket to make a payment I touch the fingerprint sensor and it unlocks the phone ready for payment.
There is not a chance of you seeing me do this and to all intents and purposes it looks like I've just got the phone out and touched it on the terminal. If the phone has been unlocked for more than a couple of minutes the payment will be refused and you have to touch the sensor again or enter the pin.

But to open the phones wallet they have probably used fingerprint or Facial ID. I bet I can cancel my card far quicker via the bank or CC app that could be done by phoning the card issuer. Yes if your phone is stolen that becomes more difficulty, but having wallet stolen is also a problem until you can contact the card issuer.

Probably impossible to phone if you have no phone as most call boxes do not work any longer. If wallet is stolen, I can contact the card issue within minutes to cancel.

Unfortunately we had to do this a few years ago when OH's purse was stolen while on the train from Exeter to Newton. and cards stopped straight away. A few weeks late the wallet was found minus bank cards and returned to OH. We had a strong suspect, but could prove nothing. If it was a phone doubt if it would have been handed in. Being old fashion and very security conscious, we will stick with cards for now.

I have noticed in some supermarkets around us that there is no signal inside the store. Not sure what happens then? Surely if a banking app fails, you can still use your card?

I hadn’t realised that cards in your phones wallet can be reissued directly to the phone. That’s good if you are away from home and not able to access the new cards posted to your home.

Yes - I myself have used this feature. In 2019 I dropped my wallet going through Heathrow security on my way to the USA. Didn't realise till I got to the airport lounge. I couldn't fly to the US without a working credit card, so left the airport (which was hard work). I got mack to my office and started canceling cards. When I canceled the 1st card, the replacement appeared direct on my phone - more or less immediately. It was at that point I realised I could do the trip with virtual cards. Went back to the airport, back though security, and promptly found my wallet on the floor where I had inadvertently dropped and kicked it.

No - it's not a banking app. It does not use data. It's a virtual card on your virtual wallet, that can only be accessed and used when you authenticate your phone. Just like your physical card does not need data, nor does an NFC contactless card on a phone. The major difference is it needs authentication to make a payment.

I believe that contactless from the phone does not rely on you having signal. It does rely on the merchant having a connection.

If the phone is stolen the cards are still safe. Possibly a geek expert might be able to eventually get into it. But that gives plenty of time to cancel. In my case, I could borrow a phone or computer and log on to my accounts and cancel from there.

That could be a struggle depending on whether 2FA is needed, the text would go to your missing phone.😱

You are asked which device you want to receive it on, also I think how, so you opt for email. But I think you are correct, it needs to be one of a number of registered devices.

For me, I just need to remember my password manager password. I then have access to all.

It is important to have secure recovery systems and not be reliable on one device.

Other scams are where less honest people buy things privately then show the seller that their phone has made a bank transfer, when in reality its a phony app that just looks like a banking app and does no such thing. Buyer walks away with item, seller gets no money.

Phones use NFC tech. A bit different than RFID with more security, and a shorter distance. It is thought a RFID pouch may disrupt the signal. In the past they could be set up to pay specific readers even with the phone locked. On Apple this was express mode. Designed to pay for trains or open doors.

So far as I can see. This has been dropped. In order to use mine I need to double click followed quite quickly by showing my face then quite quickly again putting near the reader. I cannot see how a reader would have the opportunity to steal data in the way that is done with cards.
