Very sad when you ask a question because you do NOT know the answer and you get a silly response! No wonder I have no interest in compromising my security and prefer to stick my using my good old fashion card instead of holding up a queue of people in a supermarket because the phone will not connect to authorise the payment!
The phone doesn’t need to connect to the mobile network in a store etc. The only communication is NFC which is between the phone and the reader.
And I presume the store needs it's internet connection for the reader to validate/process the transaction ?
I would also presume the store need connections to process contactless or chip and pin card payments.
I really think it’s not worth the trouble of trying to explain, there is an absolute lack of understanding of how these things work.
Please Buckman, the phone works EXACTLY the same as your card, it connects to the card reader EXACTLY the same. You have a total lack of understanding of how it works, and yes it is funny when you make such silly comments, like the one above.

I think that it has been explained in this thread and specifically DD’s post at #45 and mine at # 49 plus others by Gumpy, Tobes, JC and DisH, Sam. So given the information in this thread there’s more than enough to enable someone to gain a breadth of information. Plus there’s also the internet to search too. I sense though it’s a bit like EVs; a topic with firm views on both sides.
WOW! How did you know what I like to do? Did one just yesterday, not to far but amazing nonetheless. Living in the Dartmoor National Park and just 40 mins from our amazing Coastal Footpath, I am totally spoilt for choice.
One of my go to books for Dartmoor Walks when we lived there in the early 1980s.
That would be on the harsh part of Dartmoor, those SLRs were heavy! D&D, probably the finest ever Infantry Regiment in British Army history. 😉👍
In comparison to the African bush, there are no harsh parts of Dartmoor. In comparison Dartmoor is fairly level.
I used to take the Scouts on the annual North-South trek. Great fun as most of them did not have long enough legs to span the boggy north sections. Wednesday afternoons were sports activities and a group of us would invariably go on to the Moor. Much better than watching sports and we were too old to compete in the college teams.
I have traveled across five African countries, and hiked to and stood on the highest point of the African continent, but Dartmoor ain’t flat my friend……..But the Brecon Beacons! They are a challenge, especially when you take on the contours like I did……..once! 😳
Although I am not familiar with Infantry Regiment in your post, the Rhodesian Light Infantry initially was part of the British Army until UDI. It was recognised as one of the finest fighting forces in the world.
Plus dealing with the native wildlife, a tough environment for sure. Please note that I did not say it was flat, but in comparison to where we operated, it is flat and lovely and cool. No fun operating in temperatures exceeding 30C. We started off at about 5am and carried on until about 11am and then set off again about 3pm. Even worse nif operating down in the Zambezi valley where it si very humid in the summer.
By the way the above is not a scam and we did not have mobile phones!
When I was a student at the college in Plymouth our design and make project was to produce a stretcher for the Dartmoor Rescue Group that was man portable and could be wheeled along narrow sheep tracks. We evolved our design based somewhat on the Macinnes stretcher but with significant weight reduction. Testing it on a night rescue excercise was a bit challenging.
