Any body towing with a Chrysler Voyager?

Hi

I have a 1997 Chrysler Grad Voyager 3.3 litre V6 Petrol/LPG. Tows well, Ok we only pull 1200Kgs, its 85% weight must be about 1700kgs, i've never worked it out!

Its got a 4 speed auto box and returns 20MPG solo 15 towing, with LPG at 1/2 price of petrol thats like doing 40 - 30 MPG, 'm happy. Thev range when towing is down to about 130 miles on a tankof gas but its just a case of planning fuel stops to avoid running on petrol.

OK, you won't have a problem with your 1200kg caravan but if my memory serves me right, the Grand Voyager has a maximum permissible towload of only 1600kg, despite its relatively high kerbweight.

didn't know that...thanks. It never occured to me that i might have a max tow thats less than its MTPLM ! Should have checked.

Looks like that twin axle i'm dreaming of might have to stay a dream though .....

i'll look in the hand book tomorrow.

you are right lutz the grand voyager does have a max tow weight of 1600 kgs. thats probably the reason you dont see many towing, plus the diesel is very noisy and course.

hi Icemaker,

good point you don't see many towing, i supose if you need one you'l normaly be 6 up in it, so you'l ant a big heavy caravan.

Also 15MPG towing is hard to live with.!!

The deisel is a 2.8 four pot, thats 1.25L per pot, chug, chug, chug!!

Sorry its took a while gareth i am on a late shift this week so not had much time for ther computer, i supose it is a bit of a chugger at that size per cylinder although it should last a long time.

Is that all the petrol does to the gallon ? i knew they where pretty poor on fuel but i didnt think they where that bad, we used to get 50 + mpg solo out of our tdi seat alhambra and an average of 35 mpg towing with our coachman vip 530/4 on the back at nearly 1600 kgs.

we now have a ford s-max 2.0 diesel, ive not towed with it yet but its currently showing 40.9 mpg driving round town so i expect similar to the alhambra towing.

i will find out on jan 4th when i take the van out for the first time next year.

Hi Icemaker

You must remember that we bought the Voyager and had it LPG converted straight away as we do 20,000 miles a year its paid for the conversion in a year, now it costs us the same as a motor doing 40MPG solo 30MPG towing , we love the comfort and space, oh yes, and 185BHP is handy too!!

Gotta admit 20MPG is shoddy though !

I use my 3.3 V6 Grand Voyager (LPG converted)to tow a Twin Axle Avondale Argente 650/6 (1600kg) never had a problem except telegraph hill Exeter (down to 40mph near top, thats car fully loaded with the wife,3 kids ,bikes etc!)

I usually sit at 60mph cruise control on and let the auto box & engine do their thing, that leaves me fresh and relaxed after a long trip.

It does approx 150 miles towing on 67 litres of LPG

whatever that works out at in MPG ?

Friends keep telling me to buy a diesel towcar, but I cannot see logic in wasting thousands swapping my car just to line a car dealers pocket to save a few pounds a week in fuel!
