Anyone tow with a 1.9tdi octavia?

Hi all, I am useless with all the weight stuff that we have to consider when buying a new car.

I currently own a 2004 Ace Jubilee Herald, I am looking to buy a 2.0TDI Octavia, a year or 2 old. To open my options I would consider a 1.9TDI but i dont know if its powerful enough.

I currently own a 130 TDCI Mondeo but its a bloody money pit, just when you get to the end of the repairs something new and horrid crops up every time, its now time to get rid of it for something more reliable.

I know the 2.0TDI is hugely capable of towing my van but what do you all think about the 1.9TDI?

We recently swapped our 2004 old shape 1.9tdi for a 57plate new shape elegance.

Our van is a 2006 Ace Jubilee Envoy, which has a MPTLM of 1288kg. We have had no problems towing wityh the old car, but have already noticed that the new car seems to have a bit more appetite for the job. It wasn't until we were in the process of swapping that we realised that the old car was only 90bhp. Even so, we never had any trouble trundling along at 60mph, and there was a bit in reserve on the couple of occasions we needed it.

We would see mpg figures in the range of 34 - 38mpg, and it was noticeable that the lower figures came when we were fully loaded for our annual trip to Belgium. We read into this that it would not be sensible to think of pulling anything much bigger than the Envoy.

Thanks for the input guys, its nice to know that i dont need the 2.0tdi, there are far more 1.9's out there to pick from.

I took my mundano in to the garage again this morning, it now needs a new rear calliper, hand brake cable, anti roll bar link and a boost hose. (i blew the hose on the weekend towing my neighbours van, its now botched up with a puncture repair kit and duct tape to keep it moving)

all this after fitting new sub frame bushes, discs, pads, servicing, a grands worth of injectors and regassing the aircon. not all in the same month thankfully.

i find myself pondering over is it worth changing, there cant be too much more wrong with it, is it better the devil you know?

the mondeo is a formidable tow car, very well designed too, but until ford start making their parts out of quality materials they will always be the underdog in my opinion .

the Skoda seems to be so well built and so reliable, i have some serious thinking to do.

It's very interesting to compare experiences.

We bought our old car in July 2004, when it was 3 months old, and it had 5000 miles on the clock. It had been the showroom demonstrator, and we got cruise control, climate control, alloys, and leather kit thrown in. The model was the Ambiente, but with a SE badge cos of the extras.

I believe this has the same engine as our Seat Alhambra 1.9TDI (VW PD) and it is a superb, reliable, economical engine and brilliant at towing.

Yours may have a different power rating but it is a brilliant engine, ours has done 115,000 now and seems to get better and this is with a heavier car body and a heavier van.

I was suprised when in Germany on a campsite that there were several Superbs with 1.9 engine and large caravans to boot. We have the Skoda Elegance with 140 bhp and dsg box our caravan weighe 1324 klg and it pulls better than the X-Trail we had and that was a 2.5.
