Anyone wired up a towbar on a Mondeo?

Hi,

am in the process of wiring up the towbar on my new towcar (Mondeo). Had to wait for the Haynes manual for the car first.

On the Zafira I found a dedicated plug for the towing electrics and simply spliced in to the back of it. On the Mondeo however I cannot find a plug. I have identified all the wires for the lights etc on the nearside rear behind the trim. I have a 'Haynes' so can identify , stoplights, indicators etc but cannot find a wire for the 'always positive' I need for the fridge charge pin on the euro skt. Now the book tells me that there is a fuse (max 20A) for towing electrics on the engine bay fuse box so I assume there must be a lead running to the back of the car from that fuse - no. I can't belive that Ford would make you run a wire when you put a towbar on - after all they do a factory fitted towbar option.

Q is does anybody know where I can find it? The towbar electrics supplier sent me a long length of wire (plus the isolation relay) so I could rune one from the front but can't believe I should have to.

Your help(as usual) would be greatly appreciated

To get your fridge working well when it's being towed it needs a supply that is not going to suffer from voltage drop. Only a cable of at least 2.5mm2 will do. There's nothing around the boot area that will give you that (although some fitters do pull a fast one by picking up from the boot light) so it's the accepted thing to run the supply from the battery.

I Agree. Have always run a seperate green wire with fuse from the battery for fridge.

The one time we had a dealer fit, the fridge relay burnt out twice. Ran a seperate wire myself and all was well.

Thanks for your advice. I understand now why they included the cable (which looks like 2.5mm). Will try and see if I can get to the back of the eng fuse box(to the fuse marked 'trailer'.

Much appreciated.

Did you run the cable under the car or within it?

Under the floor of my car (Citroen C5 estate)the fuel and hydraulic pipes are enclosed in a plastic conduit. I threaded the wires - I used one for the fridge and a second for the battery charging - through a length of plastic tubing and then put them in the conduit. The wires then went up over the fuel tank, through a grommet under the back seat and into the boot area. The two relays are fitted in a convenient storage compartment.

Finished the wiring yesterday. Ran a 2.5mm2 cable from the battery(via fuse) thru bulkhead grommet to the back of the fuse board on the passenger side. Then followed main loom to the rear of the car (along sill beneath trim). All very straight forward apart from picking up the wiring from the o/side rear light. Had to run two cables accross the back of the car. On the old car (2001 Zafira) there was a plug on the o/side which carried all the wires for a towbar hookup. I thought (naive me) that a more modern car (2006 Modeo) would also have similar but apparently not. Tested and all works fine. Really impressed with supplier of towbar and electrice tho. Everything I needed, down to the fuse, grommets, ti-wraps etc all in the kit. Also very pleased to help with any queries over the phone.

Thanks for all your help.
