Not our scene. It's a Hoseseasons place so doesn't come that cheap.

I just don't like sites with statics and tourers mixed.

Looking at the pictures the touring pitches look cramped to me.

As this is your vey first trip to Scotland, over six weeks may I suggest you try and get into Bunree for two weeks, North Ledaig just above Oban is great and then maybe a few weeks in the Pitlochry area. I like Invercoe best but there is also Blair Castle site which is excellent.

On your way up have an overnight at Troutbeck head.

Just remember Scotland is massive and it's very easy to fall into the trap of doinig everything and seeing nothing.

Also avoid the A82 Loch Lomond route.

Cheers

Alan

We went here many years ago, when we got our first caravan and although it was a static site, the touring pitches were away from that area. The site was lovely and had it's own little beach. The pool was only in the planning stage, and they had work to do but on the whole enjoyed it, especially the views across the sea. The pitches were in circular areas and were ok for room, the toilets were clean and well looked after. The pub/club area was nice and they had entertainment on and the food was good. The only downside was the very steep hill down from the shop/reception area and then up to the pitches. The site also had a small stream running through the valley adjacent to the 'camping/tent' area.

On the whole a lovely site, but like I say, it's at least 10 years since we went there and I'm sure things have changed, although it was a Hoseasons site then too.

Good luck

Hi Jo-anne

Am I right in thinking you are enquiring about Auchenlarie near Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway. If it is you will find a number of review, including our 2005 one here

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=3594
(ukcampsite.co.uk is generally an excellent website for campsite reviews)

Whether you would like Auchenlarie depends on what you are looking for in a site. I have known it for over 35 years, I lived in nearby Gatehouse of Fleet whilst doing what would now be called a "gap year" before college. I have returned as frequently as I can over the years with my own family

Dumfries and Galloway is generally a beautiful area but Auchenlarie is not one one of my favourite sites. It is a mainly static site with the touring pitches laid in circles and on sloping ground. I'm not a lover of commercialised sites generally but Auchenlarie is not too bad for this type. Looking at the Hoseasons website it looks as though Auchenlarie has extended its facilities somewhat. Another thing about the site is that it has a stunning, if rather windy, clifftop location, it is about 5 miles from the nearest small town,ie, Gatehouse of Fleet and there is nothing else nearby in terms of shops, pubs, etc.

There are lots of other sites in the area which I would recommend more. Mossyard just along from Auchenlarie, there are reviews on UKC, under Gatehouse of Fleet, is a lovely site on a working farm with its own private beach.

If you want to know of other sites in this area just post what you're looking for and I'll be pleased to advise. There is lots of lovely countryside and beaches but it is not strong on man made amusements!

Regards

Tim
