can anyone help i am thinking about buy a volvo S60 deisel or a renault laguna 1.9 dci can any one tell me which is the better towing car for my caravans mtplm is 1240kg thanks also the miles per gallon on each towing and single
 
My sources indicate that:

Volvo 2.4D or 2.5D6 Diesels

Kerb weight 1500Kg (Approx)

85% = 1275Kg

Max Trailer wt = 1600Kg

Renault 1.9 dCi (120/130)

Kerb weight 1350Kg (approx)

85% = 1147Kg

Max Trailer wt = 1500Kg

Both of the cars you mention are technically capable of towing your 1240Kg caravan - though the Volvos are a closer 85% match and have more weight headroom if you change your caravan.

The slightly bigger engines in the Volvo's will also probably provide better power - making towing easier.

I have no data about Mpg, but it is largely down to how you use your right foot.

I tow with an 03 Laguna. In terms of power we have no problem at all with the sorts of weights mentioned and to be honest it has plenty to spare. The issue we have is the rear suspension on our car. The back end of the car is very soft and saggy and I'm considering adding extra springs. This may not be an issue with the newer model but Renaults do tend to be on the softer side.

As much as I like the car I wouldn't give it an unreserved thumbs up as a tow car close to its max weight.

We used to have a Renault Languna 1.9 DCi. As Jon has said we found it very soft at the back. Our caravan in the bailey Ranger 500/5, it pulled okay but I had concerns when reading in a mag that renault only give the kerbweight for driver (therefore other passengers not included or luggage. They suggested you did not go over the maximum tow weight of the any other circumstances which is 1100. We have recently replaced it with a seat alambra only a 75% match, much better.

Hi,

I tow with a laguna tourer 3LTR V6 .. no problems with power but found back end sagged , so i fitted "MAD" progressive springs to the rear and it has made a big difference to the stability.
