Hi, will be travelling to south wales next week from Stafford. Intented to go M6, M5 and M4 but was wondering if anyone had gone M5, M50, then on A roads to M4?? If so, which route is the better one and what are the A roads like, ie are they single or dual carriageway? Any advice on which route to take would be appreciated, thanks

Its dual carriageway all the way from the M50 to the M4. Don't know what the volume of traffic will be like when you travel but it will save you a bit of mileage:)

Your best route will be the M6, M5, M50, A40, A449 and then back onto the M4 at Newport. The junction at Newport can be a bit tricky and busy at times but is controlled by traffic lights. The rest of the route is ok and you will avoid the Severn Bridge tolls.

As stated the best route would be to use the M50 from the M5 at Stencham services and then the dual carraigeway A449 from Ross to Newport. No need to touch A40. It also saves the Severn Bridge toll. Road very good however maybe slight hold up past Monmouth for traffic lights. M4 generally busy up to Junction 36 at Sarn Services, Bridgend, be aware of lane changes at Newport and Cardiff East - reduces from three to two lane motorway. Road works are ongoing at junction 36 on the new roundabout off the motorway. If you use this exit for the services use Sainsburys, off the roundabout - far cheaper fuel and restaurant than official services area. Also large shopping retail outlet at this complex. West of Bridgend speed cameras are on the motorway at the 50mph stretch at Port Talbot. No further problems at present west to Pont Abraham (end of motorway). From here dual carraigeway A48 and then A40 through to St. Clears. Normal roads from this point west to Tenby, Haverfordwest, etc.

Good luck and rnjoy your visit to south Wales.

Hi there. Must say that I agree with the other comments on using the M50. Its a great road for towing on, even when a little busy. Just watch your speed just before the junction with the M4. There is a long gentle down hill slope before an uphill stretch. The local boys in blue quite often wait there to take a nice welcoming photo. Have a great holiday in Wales. It's a great place.
