hi all can anyone tell me what the tow weight of a bmw e38 740 is?

and do they tow well? i have a 1800 kilo van so dont want to strain the car too much

also same question for the e39 540 tourer

All BMW E38's have a 1900kg max. towload.

The E39 540i Tourer has a 2000kg mx. towload (same applies to the 530i and 530d, by the way, too).

Of course, that is a decision that you will have to make for yourself, but personally I would have no reservations about going right up to the manufacturer's limit (other decision criteria like the 85% weight ratio recommendation excluded). After all, the manufacturer guarantees with his specification that the car is technically capable of towing at that limit without jeopardising its durability, etc.

fair point but i just like having a safe margin with over straining the car

looks like ill be keeping the discovery for a while longer yet lol
