BMW E90

Hello to everybody on here,i am new so please be gentle.

I own a '55' plate BMW e90 330i saloon. The car is a petrol model with an automatic gearbox.I am looking to purchase a Van Royce 4 berth caravan (sorry not too sure of the exact model) but it is about 16/17ft long..would my car be ok with this sort of size van and is a auto ok to tow with.

Best Regards

Steve.

It is vital to check the maximum permissible towload of your car and the maximum laden weight of the caravan first. Once this has been done you will know whether the combnation is technically feasible and legal. The next step is to see whether it is suitable, either by getting responses from other owners or allowing internet-based matching services to do the job for you. To raise the question in this forum is to do the second step before you've done the first.

I know the outfit is legally ok as my car and van are only 72% match and the guy that owned the van before me towed it with a mondeo 1.8 petrol car.

The question i was asking is is an automatic ok to tow with as i have heard all sorts of horror stories that they dont make good towcars.

That the outfit is a 72% match doesn't necessarily make it legal.

Having said that, I wouldn't tow without an automatic anymore.

I've been told autos are actually better than manuals for towing. Dunno if this is true. I tow with an auto diesel Octavia and haven't had any difficulties. I like the fact that I can concentrate on observing and steering and not on shifting gear.

My grandad used to pull a hefty little caravan called a nene valley dove with his automatic one litre mini. A relative with an engineering background said the auto box was the thing that made it possible - something to do with the way the torque converter dissipates power. But don't take my word for it, I'm an amateur.
