Bois Soliel nr Royan

I am looking to book this campsite for 2008 - going July/August. Can anyone give me any information on the area (things to do/see) for kids ages ranging from 7 to 17.

Also any useful equipment to take ie are the pitches fully serviced (taps and drainage). Does anyone know if they hire equipment such as fridges. Any other information would be gratefully received as it will be only our second foray abroad with the caravan after going to La Yole at St Jean de Monts this year.

Hi Mike,

We were at La Yole & Bois Soleil in June this year.

Considering that we went in June Bois Soleil was full.

The pitches are of varying shapes & sizes but each 1 has its own tap & drain. Some provide more shade than others.

There is a bar providing entertainment, a good size pool & cafe / take away.

There is a beech just off the site.

Other than the beech & pool not much else for the young ones. As I said we went in June so the site was not fully open.

Royan is only about 10 mins away by car giving much more to offer.

Hi Mike, been to Bois Soleil many times and have booked only yesterday for a fornight in late June / early July.

Each pitch has it's own tap and drain so you can easily rig up a constant water supply to your aquaroll and drainaway from sinks and shower.

In my opinion there are lots of things to do, a good visit is to Phare de Cordonne ??? a lighthouse built on rocks out to sea, the visit depends on tides but an excellent 'out of the ordinary' visit.

Over the years we have visited many interesting and scenic places including catching an early morning ferry over the mouth of the Girond and driving down the coastal road through very scenic villages as far as Bordeaux.

We once caught an old steam train from Tremblaine ???

By now you will realise that we really like the site and the area.

Hope you decide to go but if you do, bookings are being taken for 2008 now, and demand is as high as usual. cheers Tony

sorry Mike, meant also to say that fridges can be hired from reception but I think you need to be in there early.

The beaches are the main attraction, but there's also lots to do if you get a rainy day: fabulous aqauarium at la Rochelle, Cognac distillery tours (for all ages), la Palmyre zoo - one of the best in France.

You might also want to check out the site we went to last year Logis du Breuil at St Augustin sur Mer (www.logis-du-breuil.com) - it's close by, but a smaller site and a bit quieter - depends what you want really. I haven't stayed at Bois Soleil but it is on the coast road which suffers from a lot of traffic in the summer peak, whereas the location of Logis is in a village about 2 miles from the coast and avoids all of this.

It's a great family holiday area, so wherever you go, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Last summer was the worst weather for 10 years there apparently, and we still were able to go on the beach nearly every day, with temperatures in mid 20s with a few days in the low 30s. The year before, it was 35 degrees + every day!

Many thanks for your replies Graham, Tony and Andy great info.

But everything changes - tried to book Bois Soliel but was informed that they are full (with people who have pre-booked - these may not book properly but they won't know until next year) As I am going away on the busy two weeks 26th July until 12 August I cannot wait for the chance that pitches will become available.

So on that score does anyone know of any other nice sites in the Royan area for a family with teens and a 7yr old. And also any of the information regarding that site as asked originally.

Hi Mike

Just arround the corner from Bois Soliel is a site called Ideal Camping. www.ideal-camping.com.

Out of season we were using Camping cheques & intended to stay the week at Bois Soliel. As there we no places for 2 nights we stayed at Ideal, untill we could get on to B.S.

My wife prefered Ideal out of the 2 sites but it was the fact that Ideal cost 21Euros / night & B.S. 14Euros / night (camping cheque) that we went to B.S.

Hi Mike,

I can recomend Camping Bonne Anse Plage in La Palmyre. It's a brilliant site with a fantastic pool complex and all the amenities - bar, resturant, take away, shop etc etc. The owners are very friendly and there are miles of cycle paths right outside the campsite so you can cycle everywhere. I would book up quick though as this is another site that fills up fast.

You could try Le Puits de L'Auture (www.camping.puitsdelauture.com)- only one or two miles north of Royan. Head towards Royan from the motorway and I think is is just on the left of the D25 at St Palais sur mer. It was an option for us at Whitsun last year which we would have tried if we had not liked Sequoia Park (towards Marennes). Try their web site and ask for their brochure to be forwarded to you. It is a 4 star site but, not having been there, cannot comment any further. Sequoia Park is a Castels Club site and although it was lovely in low/mid season - it might be a bit hectic in high.

Many thanks for all the information from evereybody. Have now booked Le Puits de L'Auture for the last week in July first week in August through the CC&C with the Dover - Calais ferry going and will use tesco vouchers for the tunnel returning. Unless Tesco and P&O reinstate the Hull - Zeebrugge route.
