butane/propane????

just got given a spare gas bottle which i noted sayes butane, i,m sure the one i have is propane. does it matter? a friend says only real difference is freezing point and gas fridge/cooker etc will run either. advise before i blow up the van appreciated

Hi Richard,

Butane is normally in a blue bottle, it burns hotter than propane which is in a red bottle, this can make some appliances more efficient. Propane will not freeze in winter, butane can, and butane normally has a clip on fixing, propane has a left hand thread fitting. We use propane all year round because it saves changing the pipes and bottles over or storing more than we need. The Calor Gas dealers will change any Calor bottle type or size for any other.

Your equipment will run on either but each requires their own regulator so most people stick to one or the other, rather than having to change the regulator every time you want to change the bottle. We have used propane for years now because it will work at much lower temperatures whereas butane stops gassing off at about 4 degrees. You will probably find that you gas supplier will swap the bottle you don't want for the type you do (provided it is the same make).

Point of order, Calor 'Depots' will swap bottles of different gasses/sizes, 'dealers' however are quite a different matter and more often than not won't
