C-Max

Hi, I'm considering getting a C-Max 2.0tdci Zetec to pull my '04 Elddis Avante 505 (MTPLM 1325kg). I'd appreciate any comments from anyone with a similar outfit. Cheers, Steve.
 
Hello there I have a ford focus c-max zetec and this pulls my 2005 470/4 Bailey Ranger with no problems at all.It may start to struggle with your caravan because my mtplm is only 1192kg i will also be interested to see if any other people reply with a similar outfit.

Hello again ive noticed that there is a similar question asked about the c-max 2.0 tdci and alan says that he pulls a swift charisma weighing 1291kg with no problems at all.

This query has come up in other forums and I can only suggest that you run a check via one of the specialist websites for car/caravan matching.

Personally, I wouldn't consider trying to tow a 1325KG caravan with a Focus, but then I'm oldfashioned.

If I'm not mistaken the kerbweight of the C-Max is 1431kg and with a MPTLM of 1325kg on you caravan you will be running at around the 93% mark which unless you are an experienced tugger with your noseweight bang on it could be a little hairy at times.

Not a good combination,even with a payload of 250kg in the car you will still be borderline. Unless I have the kerbweight wrong.

Firstly, actual vehicle kerbweights are invariably higher than published figures and secondly, I doubt whether anyone can tell much of a difference between a 85% and a 93% match under otherwise identical driving conditions and using the same equipment (car and caravan). For this reason I wouldn't be too concerned.

I've already checked the kerbweight for the 2.0tdci zetec, its quoted as 1506kg which makes an 88% match. Cheers.
 
Thanks, everyone for your comments, especially Michael. I still have an open mind about my next towcar, but the C-Max still appeals. The Kerbweight on the Zetec is 1506kg which would give an 88% weight ratio which seems pretty close to ideal.
 
Sorry Lutz, although I do agree that kerbweights will not conform exactly to the manufactured specs your post gives the impression there is a significant difference in road supplied vehicles. This is wrong. The only reason kerbweights will change is if a particular vehicle has had extra items added, or removed (less likely), that may add to the weight. The initial 'kerb' weight weight has to be within the manufacturers' specs, or the vehicle is illegal,??

The only way to be absolutely sure is to weigh both individual car and caravan. You also have to define does kerbweight include, or not, driver. I prefer to err on the negative side of both. I also feel you are being a little blase about the fact that 93% trailer load will act similarly to 85%. Physics suggest otherwise, although an experienced driver may be able to compensate safely. An inexperienced driver may not be so fortunate which is why the 85% 'rule' has been identified as giving a degree of latitude to allow for any 'abnormalities'.

If any driver is unsure of what they are doing, and by that i mean is asking advice, then let us keep them within the defined rules so at least they reduce any chances of conflict to a minimum.
