c4 1.6 hdi auto

The kerb weight of a C4 is around 1270kgs. If you apply the 85% weight ratio, your caravan's loaded weight shouldn't be more than 1080Kgs.

Whilst John D's advice is sound it's also a bit restrictive; I would personally take advantage of moderner developments, something we might all need to do as "green issues" put increasing pressures on our caravaning and tow vehicle choices.

With active electronic dynamic stability systems such as Al-Ko's ATC fitted to the caravan it's increasingly practical to increase the weight ratio above the old guide ratio of 85%.

I would not recommend this is done casually but with care and experience I would suggest that moving up to vans with 100% ratio match is now quite reasonable.

This technology addresses the stability issue, the main inhibitor in the use of low mass tow vehicles however it does nothing to improve the lack of power and torque these vehicles also tend to suffer from. In this regard I feel the other old guide of 40 horsepower for each tonne of train weight mass still is a sensible lower limit.

Notwithstanding all this you still have of course to be "legal"; thus must keep within your driving license allowance and the vehicle makers quoted towing and train weight limits.

As you are focusing on a turbo diesel things ought not be too limiting.

My data for the particular model in question shows a kerbweight of 1368kg, although the actual kerbweight will very likely be slightly in excess of this, and a maximum gross train weight of 3090kg. If the car is loaded up to its max. GVW of 1790kg, the maximum towload would then be 1300kg.
