Having just been in the unfortunate position of having to renew my car insurance with a very much increased quote I decided to do a search on the web I was surprised to find out that due to my freelander having a modification [tow bar] this increases the premium has anybody else experienced this.

Who are you insured by?
I stated to my insurance company that I had a tow bar fitted and they said it would make no differance as it was not a performance mod.
When my renewal came up I questioned the price and got it reduced, this was with LV

Some Insurers startwith low premiums to seduce you and then add all the extra costs as you have found out.
Aviva are still the best for our Sorie , no extra for the towbar.
You are right to disclose about towbar and towing, everyone should always disclose this to their Insurer.

There was an article on the news today where the 18 yo insures his £600 1.0 corsa .Cost.....£72000.

No wonder ther arfe so many uninsured drviers on the roads these days. If the insurers keep pushing up the cost fo insurance, there will be a lot more uninsured drviers. Cost of premiums is now getting ridiculous!

OK trying to put this sort of thing into perspective.
MOST kids in there very late teens can get insurance, for sums ranging from £1000 to £2000. OK i know it sounds a lot especially to people of an older age, when i remember being able to get car insurance as a named driver at the turn of the 80s, for £200 for a car that cost less than £500. but that's nearly 30 years and using any index would take that up to a £1000 today.

Now paying around £350 Full comp but with a no claims history going back way to far to remember then even today without the no claims bit as a 47 year old that would be getting close to a £1000.
Insurance is a completive market anyway, and cars are getting no cheaper to repair so of course premiums are going up year in year.
Yet i always find it amusing people can pay 15 or 20k for a car and moan about insurance premiums that are in the hundreds!
for me its all part of growing up and making choices, being grown up enough to realise what you can and cannot have right away or even in reality afford without making sacrifices.

One of the reasons I havent updated my 3 year old car is the jump in insurance cost. That young man was told a deposit of £17000 and 10 instalments of £5500 .I think if you can afford that you could probably afford a slightly better car

That's spot ont Jonny. We have a good 60 / 70% no claims discount which many forget
My nephew is paying or should I say my brother is paying £2,000 for a basic VW Polo TP only, no bonus earnt yet ..

We should all remember it is wise to pay that little extra for the protected No Claims discount.
