Caravan covers - any positive comments??

Does anybody have any positive comment/experience of caravan covers, particularly Pro-Tec or Specialised Accessories? CC and C&CC endorse them both. Algae is a real problem in our storage area. A good quality cover seemed to be the solution. Would hate the 'cure to be worse than the condition' with a new 'van.

Defintely recommended. I have a 'Specialised Accessories' cover and the van is as clean as the day it was covered come the new season. I have had no problems with condensation or scratching.

I accidently ripped mine recently when I caught one of the securing straps under the wheel of the van whilst moving it - clumsiness on my part! I called the company who offered to repair it free of charge if I paid the postage (about

I had a Speciallised Accessories cover for some years which was excellent as others have said.

the only problem I foound was putting it on the van in other than flat calm. You need two fairly active bodies to draw in from uone end up and over to the other and a couple of brooms seem to tbe the best tools. This might be a bit tricky in a storage compound if other vans were parked closely. If buying another, I would consider a top "cap" rather than a complete cover.

So far the comments to my question are reassuring. Certainly there are some negative experiences logged elsewhere across the forum. I was keen to hear a balanced view.

The Pro Tec comes with two telescopic poles which seems a very useful addition from what people say about the weight of the covers. My plan would be to put the cover on then move the van into it's bay.

Got new van in April 07. Bought Specialised Accesories cover and used it last winter. No condensation, no scratching and immaculate and ready to go when cover removed in Spring. As S mentioned it's a good idea to cover sharp ends. I used bubble wrap on the chimney and aerial to avoid rubbing. First time fitting is a bit of a struggle but once you know how it's folded it is a lot easier to fit the second time.

Our SA cover seems to be doing its job perfectly. As others say, though, it is a struggle for even two people getting it on. When I brought the van back from service I had to do the job on my own, wife being away, - I did it eventually, but nearly lost the will to live! Putting the soft material on the windows is also a very faffy job, particularly solo!

What soft material? I was sent a piece of SA cover material and wondered that the inner material didn't feel 'soft'. Do you fix separate soft pieces to the windows out of personal choice or as recommended by SA? While Pro Tec have not sent a sample, their video looks like there is a 'soft' white inner material sewn in.

Thanks for your feedback.

Our SA cover came with a piece of SA material for repairing any rips and also some soft material for covering the windows. I admit that fitting the material over the windows is time consuming. A friend who recommended the SA cover to me doesn't bother with the soft window covers and his windows are still unscratched.Don't think I'll chance it though.

We use old sheets trapped in the sides of the windows. One person in the van opens/closes the window and the other person outside holds the sheet while the window closes. Works well, apart from trapped fingers.

Cling film is also a possibility but might affect the plastic of the window.

The SA cover was delivered with a large piece of material quite different from the cover material itself. It's more like J-cloth fabric, but a bit fluffier. I cut it into pieces slightly bigger than each window, marking each bit with the 'name' of the window. Fitting the pieces is best done as a two-person job as RUsure says, but last time I had to fiddle it by myself - frustrating! If you didn't get the stuff from SA, give them a call, I'm sure they would send you some FOC.

Hi. I looked at the threads running on covers last September/October when I was on the verge of buying a SA cover. Most of the comments were negative, scratching and staining of the caravan being the most common. In the end I opted for a container of Fenwick's Overwinter. It was easy to apply with a garden sprayer, I'm over 70, and so far the results have been good, although we are only half way through the winter. I store in an area where Algae is a problem, however, after three months there is no trace of the Algae. If the van stays as clean as it is now, then I'll be happy. At around

Hi there, I have had a Protec Cover on my caravan over the last two years and would not hesitate in buying another if required in the future. The location of my home is next to the Kessock Bridge which receives very strong winds and also spray of salt and debri from winter road maintenance. I would also like to point out that my caravan is facing North East when parked with its cover on, it is subjected to the most foul weather and if it were not covered would be filmed with algae. I have had absoluteley no problems with the cover from Protect.

meantime i trust I have been of some help in your purchase of a caravan cover.

Best regards,

Bill

Thanks William and all contributors. I've gone for a ProTec - positives far outweigh the bad. Now waiting for delivery. One piece of advice was that although 'good quality' the telescopic aerials are liable to make a hole in the material. That poster recommended a 'cut down ironing board cover'. I was therefore thinking about using an elasticated stool cover to pad the thing. Do you think this is necessary from your experience?
