We have just ordered a new caravan swift challenger to take delivery later in the year, we have contacted our insurance company Saga and the insurance quote was exhorbitant, we have just sold a 2 year old Hymer twin axle motorhome 8 metres long and the insurance quote for the caravan was just as expensive as the motorhome. Can I have your views please.

Angela,

When we bought our new caravan last year, I looked at Saga insurance, and was gob smacked at how expensive it was! Needless to say, I didn't bother, and stuck with the Caravan Club!

Thats interesting because I have just (in the last few days) been ringing round for quotes for our first van and the Caravan Club (which I joined) was twice the price of several others.

I compared "like for like" as far as possible and cant see how they justify being so much more expensive.

As with most things these days, yo uget what you pay for!!

The only time you will find if the cheaper insurers are REALLY cheap is when you have to claim, then the truth about costing will become a reality.

I am with the CC and unfortunately have had two claims, both of which were dealt with very quickly, very efficiently and with the least amount of trouble to me.

Is the extra cost worth it, you bet.

I came back to the Caravan Club insurance whenn we bought a new van as it was the best value for money I could find, beating the discount offered by the owners club.

Hi,

You could try NFU Mutual, I have been with them for a few years and on renewal their price/cover has always seemed realistic.

Hi Angela,

We were insured previously with Tourer Select (very good company and brilliant when we had to make 2 claims). However when we changed to a German van they would not insure it for theft.Went to Saga for 12 months and their renewal quote was

For Andrew,

May I suggest you go to page 4 of this section and read the topic Freedom Of Speech.

Update to my previous post:

Spoke with some who has been in the insurance business for years and he suggested that the main reason for such a huge price difference is often the amount of commission taken and by getting another quote from the same company a few days later can often result in a different price. Something to do with day of the week or time of the month.

So

I rang the CC again yesterday and gave them exactly the same details as before but guess what ........ they now quote me

Have you tried M.C.I.A.? ( page150 Practical Caravan mag. Nov. 2007 ) Been with them for years - one claim - very happy. But, as with all things like this you make your choice and pays your money etc.

Andrew, as it stands at the moment, I cannot clarify what I hoped you would glean from the postings I referred you to, as the company involved have threatened litigation against Haymarket if their name is mentioned in anything but a good way.

Suffice to say, I *think* you have made a mistake.
