I was just setting off on boxing day and found a screw in tyre, changed tyre and my father said he would take it to be fixed when they opened. The code on my tyre was 185/65/r14 6pr 93/91n and i am worrying that the tyre i have got now from a well known tyre firm isnt the same as it should be. The code on the new tyre is just 185/65/r14 and nothing else so can anyone help me with this. My dad did tell them it was for a caravan and they are the "best fitters in the buisness" k**k f*t.

thanks martin

Hello Patey,

I am not an expert on tyres, however I am concerned for you. The last characters on your original tyre indicate the number of layers of interleaved fabric and steel in the tyre. Most car tyres are only 4ply and 6 ply and above are usually specified for commercial or heavy duty usage. The absence of a figure usually indicated it is a 4ply rating.

The tyre depot should have replaced the tyre with a 6ply tyre. Consequently you may be overloading the tyre they have supplied. Return it immediately and complain.

Hi Martin

As the others say the ply rating is crucial.

I used K**kf*t once and they were so Cr*p I got my money back.

May I suggest you double check the ply rating and weight loading asap.

Good luck.

Cheers

Alan

Hi Patey/Martin.

It looks to me that the bunch of clowns have put a standard car tyre on your rim.

A smart tyre fitter would of looked at thespec of the original tyre for size and ply/load rating and put a like for like replacement on.

Just check your bill to see that they haven't charged you for the more expensive 6 ply tyre that you need.

Most certainly take it back, but first of all take photos of the tyres on your van and the new tyre for future reference, also photo copy the original bill of sale. KF have a habit of loosing paperwork convieniently.

I would also suggest that if they have fitted the wrong tyre, you should involve trading standards, as they have fitted a tyre that is not suitable and clearly dangerous to use. Also it is illegal to have a mix of 4 ply and 6 ply tyres on the same axle.

There is only one place for singing dancing tyre fitters and that's the circus!!

I find it difficult to believe that there is no additional marking on the tyre other than the size (185/65/R14). The load index (93/91) and the speed rating (N) must be somewhere on the tyre sidewall, too, even if if it is not immediately behind the size details.

On a budget tyre it is not unusual for the tyre build up and load rating to be quite obscure. Also unless you are clued up on what the jargon means, it is as much use as a knitting pattern is to an engineer.

Realistically most people go to trades people expecting not to have to question their knowledge or integrity. They just have expectation of sound product knowledge and good service.

Having been a quallified engineer for some 34 years, i treat a lot of trades with the sceptasysum they often deserve these days, as the fast track training system just developes pass rates on paper and doesn't breed pride in your work or craftsmanship.

Try and get your tyre from a national chain that supply and fit tyres to vans and trucks, as well as cars.

The staff, from the manager to the fitter will know what they are doing.

However, if you take in a loose wheel to have a tyre fitted, you have to emphasise that it is for a caravan,

and that you require the new tyre to have the same load rating as the old one.

They should balance the wheel after fitting the tyre.

Some fitters will tell you it is not necessary to balance a trailer tyre. You will never feel the vibration. Which is partly true. Your lockers and cupboard doors will however mysteriously open en-route depositing contents and possible breakages on the floor, and the cups and glasses will *****, rattle and chip if they are not balanced.
