further to Gafferbillโ€™s post, for some reason, Wantage seems to be one of the cheaper places for fuel, even within Oxfordshire.
When I was down Salisbury way over Easter, the petrol stations were still charging >ยฃ1.70 / litre! Came back on fumes because I refused to pay it!

In Worcestershire diesel is on average about ยฃ1.66 a litre. About 40 miles down the M5 in Gloucestershire at the garage local to where we are staying it is ยฃ1.56 a litre. Nearly a 10p difference between two counties! I wonder why?

The garage I mentioned in my opening post here, yesterday I noticed it continued the low cost diesel theme, ยฃ1.45 diesel against ยฃ1.47 petrol.

Articles in the news suggests we are all being ripped off with the price of diesel.
According to them the wholesale sale price of diesel is around 6 to 10p a litre cheaper than petrol!

I don't thinks that it's just petrol and diesel where there is a problem. Sources daily seem to show where there are price jumps or zero reductions when some would be expected. Only yesterday the BRC reported that some prices should be reducing during the year, and then went on to blame labour shortages, energy costs, wage increases to retain staff, unseasonably hot weather in our market garden....Spain/Morocco etc. All of which have some validity but very difficult to unpick the actuality.

A full tank of diesel would have been a treat when I get my new car, especially at that price!

Is it really?

With the cheaper fuel a distance of 6 miles makes a round trip of 12 Miles.

How much does it really cost you to travel that distance? Not only do you use fuel to make the journey, you are increasing the wear and tear on the vehicle which is reflected in the servicing costs. Then there is the time it takes you go and get it.

It will obviously depend on your vehicle but if you only achieve 8 miles per litre (35.6MPG) that s 1.5L of fuel based on a current average of ยฃ1.546 per litre will cost you ยฃ2.32.

Excluding lumped costs of tax and insurance, most vehicles cost in the order of at least 10pence per mile in servicing and maintenance costs that ยฃ1.20

Add these values together gives an expenditure of
2.32 +1.20+5.12 = ยฃ3.52 to save ยฃ5.00 ! Thats a real saving of only ยฃ1.48. That's wiped out if you can't take the full 50L you specified.

I'd guess the time to journey to and from, and to fill up from the cheaper fuel will take a minimum of 30min or ยฃ5.12 of minimum wage, and what about the unnecessary use of a vehicle and the pollution it causes

It could be actually costing you ยฃ8.52 to make a ยฃ5.00 saving which could be a loss of ยฃ3.52!

Is it really going out of your way to make such slim savings?

When we go shopping, we fuel up and I suspect many others do the same as it saves money and no double trips to Morrisons etc.

That is the way I read it as then one can do shopping at same time so no extra fuel used. Wish our Tesco or Sainsbury was only 6 miles away. They are just over 10 miles away from us and nearest Morrisons almost 15 miles. We top up when shopping or if passing a service station where the price is really low.

If I was a cynical chap I would wonder if the fuel companies are being "leaned upon" by the Govt to keep diesel prices high to help "nudge" we mere mortals back towards petrol! Or of course towards lashing out on an EV.
But of course I am not cynical at all.
