Citroen Multispace 1.6HDI 92bhp

Just about to place an order for this vehicle as it's function is fine to meet our disabled family needs. Any comments on this vehicle as a towing car would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think this car is about 1,250kg. Using the 85% guideline you could tow a caravan weighing just over 1,000kg, which to be honest is not much caravan nowadays. The power - 92BHP - is not a lot compared to some of the diesel engines which punch out 130 or 140 BHP. The Berlingo appears to be more of a utility vehicle than a powerful towing car.

If you don't go anywhere hilly and don't mind using the gears a lot, then towing a caravan is possible. I wouldn't like to do it myself. But any of the low to mid weight trailer tents would be just fine.

hello tony,if you click on to towing and driving safety on this forum theres a piece writen on there that might interest you.and to be honest with you,i think you will find 90hp isnt enough.the car itself and all citreons are good.i had a 90hp zx td up till 2 years ago and used it until it had 200k on it still towing abroad.and although it went ok you new you had a van on the back.now i know we,ve moved on a bit but the torque figures are very similar.and to me its alot of power from a small engine.why not see if the 2litre hdi is an option.

i dont know you family's full needs but we have a disabled child and we are changing our car to seat alhambra. lots of grunt, towbar max weight is 85 and can tow a reasonably heavy van.

I have a 2.0 hdi 90bhp Picasso it tows perfectly well my present van is 1100 looking to replace with 1200 dont see any

problems at all. - just watch your gross train weight but 90bhp

certainly is enough for a diesel. its just how heavy a van do you intend to tow.

Steve, I believe the Multispace has a lower maximum permissible towload than the Picasso so the two are not directly comparable.

Thanks everyone for your replies, we tow our 1100kg caravan with a VW T4 Transporter with a 2.5 petrol engine.

My original question was to check out if the Multispace would tow it, it appears that the weight would be at the very upper level of the 1.6 engine. I did not really intend to tow with the Multispace but was curious about any possibilities of doing so if I changed my plans. thanks again, Tony

I tow with a Peugeot 1.6HDi, but it's 110BHP rather than 92. And my caravan is a pop top so it's a smaller profile for wind resistance. It weighs 650kg with a max 850kg, and to be honest I would not like to tow with a car that was lighter or less powerful. It's all very well to be legal but it's wise to be practical too, and have a margin of safety both with power and weight.

hello steve,i know exactly what your saying.i ve towed with 90 hp for years.but bhp has very little to do with pulling power.torque is what matters, and a 2ltr hdi at 90 bhp will be a lot better than a 1.6hdi at 90bhp.
