Cleaning flush water tank

Hello, please can you tell me what is the best way to clean the toilet flush water tank, we have decided to get the caravan ready for the winter as we will not get away again this year, When i emptied to water tank i noticed alot of black bits coming out with the water, i had thought maybe to put abit of milton into it and leave for while then empty again would this work or do any harm.

Hi Jennifer.

You've got it exactly right. Whilst at the NEC, we talked to the guys on the Thetford stand, as we have had exactly the same problem. They were extremely helpful, and knew all about this problem.

It's a black algae which builds up in the tank, and their recommendation is to put Milton in the tank which will clean all this gunge out.

You'll probably have to flush it a couple of times to get rid of what's already in there completely, but then add a capful to each full tank, and the problem will not return.

Whatever you do DO NOT use bleach, parazone, or any type of domestic toilet cleaner as this will destroy the seals.

Domestic products are not good for plastic toilets for a number of reasons, and the guys were most emphatic that we didn't go down that route.

Thanks Ogre, thats another problem solved getting the caravan ready for winter takes longer than getting it ready for the start of the season. Also did the men at the show mention anything about what products you should use to clean the toilet and sink with. I have been afraid to use the normal cleaning stuff you would use at home and have been just using anti bacteria wipes and a good wash down with hot soapy water is there a product that is safe for this job.

No idea on this one. Only approached Thetford ref the loo, as it was their equipment.

We use Mr Muscle Spray Kitchen Cleaner, and have never had any problems either at home OR in the caravan. I'm not recommending it, as it's up to you what you use, but we use it.

Jennifer, We use (well she does) anti bacteria wipes for our toilet and sink. As long as you don't use the normal household cleansers, then I don't think you will cause any damage to the plastic surrounds or seals. As for the black spots in the flush water, do you use any addictives when you fill it?, I use Aquakem Pink in the flush and this prevents the black spots from forming,

best regards, Martin

Washing up liquid is full of salt to soften the water to make more bubbles,Iknow this because I use to make it, cant be doing your plastic any good. Stardrops is a safer bet no salt.J.Lo

Jennifer, I use 60ml of Pink Fluid to every 2ltrs of flush water and have yet to encounter any black spots, I also put Blue Fluid in the cassette holding tank,

best regards, Martin
