Clunking sound

Hi, we have a 2005 Swift Charisma, 2006 S-Max 2.0TDci and the ourfit are well matched. Recently I have a heard an occasional 'clunking' sound that appears to be coming from the coupling area. Any suggestions on what it could be as I can't seem to identify it. Thanks.

depends how you define clunking. Could it be your stabiliser, though that is usually more of a creaking. (technical eh)

yes these technical terms are somewhat confusing. I would call it a clunking (tow bar company are coming out to check the tow bar) as opposed to a creaking beacuse it only lasts for about a second rather than 2 or 3 or more seconds as I would think a creak would last. is this deep or just muddy?

We had a knocking noise last year comming from the vicinity of the tow bar. As the tow bar had juast been fitted and the noise was only heard towing I got the tow bar checked , no problems there. Noise continued which was only when crossing speed humps or ruts in the road. Turned out it was the spare wheel, why it only done it towing I didnt find out, but tightened the holding bracket and no more noise.

Stephen...We had a similar problem with our last van (an Elddis Odyssey) It was finally tracked down to a faultly Winterhoff stabaliser which was exchanged under warrenty. Our current van, an Abbey, is made by the Swift group and I think they all have AL-Ko stabalisers. My AL-KO has not given any trouble at all.

It is essential the towball is kept spotlessly clean and if at all possible dry because if not you will get a creaking or clunking sound. Best get your dealer to check the hitch out and maybe the stabaliser pads need adjusting.

IF your 'clunking' is happening under braking then it is most likely the damper, within the AlKo hitch, is suspect. As your van is probably still under warranty your dealer ought to fix. I have experienced this on both 'vans we have owned - both having the AlKo chassis, fortunately dealt with by the warranty.

Stephen, to check your hitch damper, push it in as far as it will go, it should be very hard to move, then watch it and see if it returns out slowly.

If it is easy to push back or stays in , it is faulty, and needs replacing
