Here we are on the net and obviously using email.

But do you use instant messaging such as MSN or Skype telephone via PC.

I keep in touch with family, friends and customers by MSN.

My daughters firm uses MSN between offices around England and Scotland and Wales as it saves so much money and they are now using Skype.

I had face to face discussion with a friend in Spain this morning via MSN and a customer just called me via Skype.

Friends I've got onto MSN see and speak to their grand kids via MSN with web cam and mic and I speak to my Cousin and her son face to face in Australia for no more than my internet connection.

I use smart phone for email and net use as even when on holiday I have to keep in touch with work being my own boss.

If you travel regularly with a laptop and need net access and have mobile phone with Infra Red or Blue Tooth try WebToGo connection for lap tops at www.webtogo.de. Dont forget to click on the union flag for english ;-)

License is 29 euro per year. Connection via most mobile phones is cheaper than hotel and a lot of wi-fi spots and invaluable if travelling abroad.

You can set level of data download use to minimise costs and set a ceiling level so you dont sky rocket you mobile bill abroad, you can also degrade the level of the display so the download info is also reduced to save money. Not as fast as broadband but generally quicker than dial up.

I see you say you're your own boss so do I take it you are single unlike most of us on here with someone to tell us what to do. I tell people I'm my own boss too but only when I'm out of earshot of Her Ladyship and thats only to strangers because people that know us know different. :O(

I have got a video phone with 3G. Can I set it up to check my emails from the phone? If so, do you know how I might do it?

Regards

Lisa

Then I should imagine that you would be able to collect your emails on way or another. My phone works with windows as its operating system so it's easy enough program to collect emails. Have you been through the menu on your phone regarding emails? If it's anything like mine, it will ask for your email address, then it might try to automatically configure, it will ask for your password, then account type (pop3) and the name (in my case O2). If it asks for incoming mail it should be

( mail."Your phone service provider".co.uk)

And if it asks for outgoing then it's (smtp.your phone service provider.co.uk) This is what I had to do for my email at O2, getting it from your ISP is just the same but instead of the phone network insert your ISP.

The trouble is, so many phones have so many different ways of setting up, perhaps if you could give the menu options we could help better

Hi Lisa, what phone do you have?

I haven't moved to 3G yet due to contract.

I only use nokia phones, and I have BT email address and o2 phone so they are easy to link up.

But you should be able to get email easily.

Lisa, this is from the O2 web site, it may help.

Setting Up POP3 Email Access

If you use Outlook Express or another email application to read your emails via POP3, the username, which is used to log in to the service, will be username@o2.co.uk. E.G. johnsmith@o2.co.uk if your login name is johnsmith.

The steps below describe how to setup POP3 email access using Microsoft Outlook Express. If you do not use Microsoft Outlook Express please use these steps as a general guide.

In Outlook Express, choose 'Tools' on the menu bar, and then select the 'Accounts' entry. The Internet Accounts window should open. Select 'Add', then 'Mail' from the drop-down menu. A new mail wizard will guide you through creating your account.

Type in your name in the 'Display name' field and click 'Next'.

Click the 'I already have an email address that I would like to use' radio button and enter your email address (username@o2.co.uk) in the 'Email address' field, then click 'Next'.

Ensure that 'POP3' is selected in the incoming mail server drop-down list. Enter mail.o2.co.uk in the Incoming mail server field and mail.o2.co.uk in the Outgoing mail server field.

Enter your username in the 'Account name' field (username@o2.co.uk). Add your password in the 'Password' field, and click the 'Remember password' check box if required. Click on "Next".

Click on 'Finish' to complete your mail account creation.

Click on 'OK', and close the Internet Accounts window.

If you have completed the above and experience problems sending mail, you may need to enable outgoing mail authentication. To do this tick the 'Outgoing Mail Server Requires Authentication' tickbox on the servers tab in Outlook Express.

If you experience further problems using this service please contact your Internet Service Provider in the first instance.

Lisa,if you can get on web just enter url on your phones and get email on line by just entering email address and password. If you want to download to your phone into email message facility via pop 3 server you should be able to find detail on how to do it on your phone providers web site and you can look on phone manufacturers web site to check what you can do.

Thanks for the replies chaps. Can't answer at the mo, just on my way out.

One quick question do you think 3G will make a charge for receiving emails to my phone?

Many thanks.

People out in the sticks where I live still use drums or pidgeons to communicate but thats better than the other side of the dike where Colin lives - they use smoke signals.

Lord B - you are going from bad to worse. Here in Wales we have a "green" and pleasant land and do not use any method of communication that will pollute our land or atmosphere. Haven't you noticed when you cross the great divide the beautiful smell of fresh Welsh air. Here in Wales we go from bard to verse with our poetic ways in both song and poems.

Please keep your insulting remarks to your own smogland.

Lisa, on my O2 account I get a free allowance for download each month for wap/gprs connection. You will have to check what you get with your 3G account, basic emails downloads are not to big.

When your phone account comes to end of its agreement call your service provider direct and tell them you are going elswhere, you will get a better deal for calls and a replacement phone than in the shops or on net dealers or newspapers!!!!!!
