Hi All, I am going to start looking at caravans this weekend. I know some questions to ask the dealer, I am really concerned about damp. Would it be wrong if I took a damp reader with me? What do most people that buy second hand do?

I would ask the dealer if he didn't mind you running a damp meter over it. If he says no he might be hiding something.
Some dealers might object to a damp meter with prongs. Ask to see service history and if it’s been carried out by dealerships or AWS then a recent one should give a good indication. But mainly you can’t detect damp by smell or sight until it’s got a hold. If there is a van you are really keen on you could buy a AWS or MCEA inspection survey. Dealer should not object to that.

First off ask for any service reports including damp reports the dealer has .Often the damp report may only have 'ticks'which doesn't tell you much. Look at the front windows , particularly behind the curtains, inside the cupboards some caravan wallboards turn a light shade of blue if damp Also look for tiny pinpricks where a damp meter has been used. Around the windows lift the inner lip of the black window seal and look at the plywood colour if it black then its damp and starting to rot. More modern caravans have woodless' walls and roof but the floors may still be plywood , look underneath the front and rear corners , looking for spongy or damp wood( to the touch). Look at the front and rear panels ,where they attach to the sides , looking for hairline cracks.Test all the systems don't take their word and get a warranty off them in writing. If in doubt walk away , its a buyers market at the moment
Plus, when you find the one you fancy make sure whoever is selling has good legal title.

I think that a damp meter is only going to be of use to you if you know how to use it, and where to check in the caravan. In addition, as has been already mentioned, the dealer may be concerned if you turn up with a pronged damp meter and do not appear to be experienced in using one.
If you are a complete novice, as you suggest, it might be sensible to ensure that you are dealing with a reputable dealer, and look for a caravan with a good service history which includes damp tests. Make any purchase conditional upon having the caravan inspected by an independent caravan technician.
A dealer will be 100% liable if they sell a caravan without good title, so thats something they all check very carefully.Plus, when you find the one you fancy make sure whoever is selling has good legal title.

However a private sale is not the same so thats something VITAL to check on a private sale before parting with any cash!
