Cycling from Rosemarkie and Bunree

We are going to both these sites at the end of June and wonder whether it is worth taking our bikes or not? We are interested in the general area around both sites for short trips out - whether the roads are fairly flat or hilly? Any help much appreciated.

Hi Chris.

I can't comment on Bunree,not having been there.But Rosemarkie,yes.

We had 8 nights there at the end of April on the C&CC site - Excellent !!

A bike would certainly be useful for tootling down to Chanonry Point (approx.1 mile) to watch the dolphins. The roads are not too hilly on the Black Isle,in fact,there are a couple of forest type cylce routes just off the main road to Rosemarkie.

Thanks for the information - that's just what I needed. Will probably take bikes. Hoping to see the dolphins was the main reason for booking this site, so I hope we do get to see them. You have given me hope! Thanks again

While we were there, the dolphins failed to show on just two occassions from the nine or ten times that we went 'spotting'.

Although the site is right on the edge of the beach, they only seem to put on their display as they round the point by the lighthouse.

According to a member of the 'Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society' who is there almost every day, there are at least 130 identified individual dolphins who frequent the Moray Firth and the coastal waters down as far as Aberdeen.

The best time to see them is when the tide is coming in.They chase the salmon up stream and as the beach and sea bed fall away steeply at Chanonry Point,the dolphins are in deep water while still being pretty close to the shore.

Anyway you'll see for yourselves,Chris.

Rosemarkie will be fine for cycling. Bunree less as the roads on that side of Loch Linnhe are very busy. However, if you take the Corran ferry across to the Ardgour peninsula, then it's more suitable. I seem to remember the ferry is free to foot passengers and cyclists.

Yes the Corran ferry is free to foot passengers and cycles.It's minutes from the site at Bunree.If you turn right when you come off the ferry,the road runs in the same direction as the main road going to Fort William.Wouldn't suggest trying the A82 into F/William as it is a busy twisty road.

Not sure what standard of cyclists you are but my hubby & his pal cycled the tow path recently at Neptunes Staircase.

Drive to Fort William and then take the A830.Before reaching Corpach there is a sign post to the right ( B8004 ) to Gairlochy.Take this and you will see a large car park right beside the Neptune's steps.There is also a hotel "The Moorings".

From here you can cycle the tow path for 7 miles.At Gairlochy there are NO facilities so take food with you.When you reach Gairlochy you can go through a gate and there is a little light house where you have a view right up Loch Lochy and you can sit & have your sandwiches.It is quite a busy canal with boat activity to watch as well.

Do you also know about the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig?

We went on the steam train about 20+ years ago and it poured all the way there and back, water streaming down the windows!Needless to say we didn't see much other than the general impression that it was probably very nice. Hopefully we may do better this time!
