My current car is potentially being "brought back" due to a catalogue of issues, and I am looking around at possible replacements, therefore I am wondering if anyone has towed with either of the following cars and what are their thoughts on them.

1) Land Rover Discovery 3 - TDV6 XS spec

2) Nissan Pathfinder - 2.5 dCi - Aventura spec

Had a discovery TDV6 last year for a month, no contest for me it would have to be the discovery with that smooth V6 engine loads of torque and smooth gearbox.

Hello William

We have the Discovery 3, ours is the HSE spec. We've had it for just over a year now, and it's a beautiful tow car. It pulls our 'van (1895KG) with no effort at all. We have not had any problems with it, and hasn't cost us anything apart from a couple of services. We are now finding that after a year it now does a few more miles to the gallon also.

Hubby says, if it was the Discovery or me, the Disco would win!! :O) :O)

Mercedes ML 270 CDI Automatic

We are having a major tranmission problem with this car whilst towing. The car intermittently revs to the max limit and all power and gears are lost. Turning the engine off and on solves the problem. A friend has had this happen with 5 people in the car and not towing.

Does anybody know if this a fixable problem or is it a torque problem ie: not fixable. Mercedes diagnostics are failing to find a fault. Our caravan is 1500kg and the car should tow 3000kg with a noseweight of 135 kg.

Sue, as suggested elsewhere, this sounds like an ECU problem. I assume your car is going into "limp home" mode? We had an '03 ML270 and had no mechanical problems. It towed very well and very smoothly with the auto 'box. Have now changed to an ML320 and it is wonderful!

Hi William,

Thats a big budget spread isn't it? A fully spec'd Disco would be getting on for twice the price of a Pathfinder so they are hardly comparable or are they?

This months 4x4 mag puts the Pathfinder head to head against the Shogun and Rexton and it comes out best so it must be OK.

If you want status and, some say, the best currently available 4x4 and are dripping in cash then go for the Disco, however the Nissan will do a worthy job as a towcar I would have thought - all the Pathfinder owners are probably away with their vans otherwise I guess this post would have attracted more comment.
