Came back from Cornwall, one of the sunniest weeks every on 17th May .
Fell foul of a mobile speed camera 52 in a 40.
To my surprised have been offered driver retraining course, either attending a class room or an I.T course.

Has anyone done one of these I,T courses, are they easy to enter how are they formulated??

My Lappy and I have a kind of love hate relationship.

Ive not done a IT driver awareness course but have used internet meetings and presentations/webinars stuff with the NHS appeals boards, and other bodies. They all seem to be similar to set up. You register, give details etc and they send you link that becomes active a short while before the event starts. At the pre scheduled time you become live and just start to listen to the speaker, and some are interactive immediately whilst others are speaker first then questions later. Some will require you to download Teams, or Zoom which are the enabling program applications, others don't require it. Perhaps ask the Force how their IT option works, it will doubtless be undertaken by a contractor.

I did the course at a local Fire Station before Covid and before you could do it online.

It takes just under 4 hours. They gave us a couple of breaks , tea /coffee etc.
Personally I found the live course very informative and believe it or not enjoyable.

Watching their videos at home I think you will miss out on the inter action with the other scallywag speedsters by going to a centre🤪

Heck of a drive back to Cornwall when the online option is available. Guess you can’t claim expenses either 😱

Plus 1, for the live course, what surprised myself was how many others on the course didn't know what maximum speeds people should be at when driving in urban areas and on dual carriageways.

Did you mean offline!

At one time you had to do the live course in the area you were caught. But that changed some years ago. I was caught in South Wales but did the course locally. Like Dusty, I found it informative and interesting. Even enjoyable. The presenters made it clear at the begining that there was no point in complaining to them that you were innocent.

Daughter got caught driving in a rural area where there was a short 30mph zone. Not many houses around at all. She did it Online.

My speeding was in Cornwall. They allowed me to go to Cirencester Fire Station. They’re not totally heartless. Well six years ago they were ok. Best Dave asks?

That’s good having a degree of flexibility of location. If that’s available to Dave what save him anxiety over the online option, or a drive back to Cornwall.

Speeding was in Worcestershire on the way back from Cornwall, can pick a location near me.
Will look at the live course.
Last Zoom meeting I tried to enter was a disaster. Signed in, I could see them but couldn't hear them, after poking at the keys a few times, I could hear them but not see them, don't think that they could see or hear me at any time.
Thanks all.

Socialising is recommended as a positive experience, especially for older persons😱

On my course, the presenters deliberately tried, and succeeded to embarrass people by asking how they would define a 30mph zone. More than 80% did not know. Luckily I did.

Around us it’s recognised by roads with street lights, many of which don’t work. 🤣

If there is a system of street lights, with less than 180m between them then that is a "restricted road" and is subject to a 30mph speed limit. No 30 signs are required. However if there is street lighting, and it's say a 40mph limit then there must be signs at thge beginning and end of that limit AND repeater signs at regular intervals, the distance between them used to have a maximum limit, but now it's just a "reasonable" distance.
Frightening how many people don't know what a restricted road is.

Wonder how many can actually judge “ less than 180m anyway.”

We do not have any street lights on the main road through our village and n either do the villages around us.

Its the street lights that make it a restricted road where no speed limit signs (other than terminus signs) are required, or indeed can be lawfully placed.
If no street lights, and a 30 (or any other) limit is in place there must be appropriate speed limit signs at each end of the village, and appropriate repeater signs. Unless of course the national speed limit of 60 applies in which case no signs are required.

But don't you have 30mph signs and derestriction signs at the entry and exit of the village?
There are signs when you enter the villages, but my reference to using street lights as "markers". to determin if youa re in a 30mph zone.

Strangely enough on both our Toyota cars, about 1/2 mile prior to entering the 30mph zone, the car shows we are in a 30mph zone when we are definitely not in the 30mph. The same applies to another stretch of road leading to the village. You turn right off the 60mph main road and immediately you are notified that you are in a 30mph zone although you are not.

Not sure whether it is the software in the car that determines the speed zone or whether it is establish from the GPS Satnav? There are no signs that the car could read to state it is a 30mph zone.

Mine showed a 40 mph limit on a local busy town road, and it has never ever been 40mph. When I updated the navigation software to the Spring 2025 release it corrected that error and now shows 30mph, and goes red if I exceed it by 1 mph or more. It uses GPS to know where it is, but its nav software to show speed limits for where it is located.
