E-Class 320 CDi Sport

Given some of the deals available we have been wondering whether to change our car or keep it for another year.

At the same time we have been investigating alternatives to replacing with another 4x4 and have been offered a deal on the outgoing E-Class 320 CDI Sport saloon.

Our caravan has an MTPLM of 1900kg - which is the max tow weight of the 320 and whilst What TowCar lists this as a good match at 93% I am concerned that the we will notice a deterioration in stability and the general towing experience.

Before deciding whether to take our interest any further we wondered whether anyone has any experience of towing with the E-Class or feedback on it suitability for our Van.

Many Thanks

Check the maximum nose weight of the E320 and see how it measures up to your van - 5% of 1900 is 95kg and I don't think the Eclass in general has this sort of figure, certainly my 220 is only 76kg.

I personally would not be too happy at towing at the upper limit, particularly on long hot journeys. If the car is an auto, check whether it needs additional transmission oil cooling and also whether it has been (or can be fitted ) with a more powerful electric fan motor as is recommended in the Brink/Thule towbar kit leaflet for the E class.

I am towing 1600KG with an E class 280CDI estate and although that is less than you are proposing I have found it just fine. Stable and plenty of power. Dont expect to get mutch more thane 26-7 mpg though.

Thanks Guys,

I had to the let the dealer know last weekend whether I wanted to proceed. However similar to Ray's response I was as not completely comfortable towing at the cars maximum capacity so decided against. Did not get as far as checking the noseweight but suspect this may also have been a deal breaker.

For the past few days I have been wondering whether I made the right decision and this confirms I have - for me anyway.

Now we just need to decide whether to keep the current car or look for something else!

Thanks again.
