Engine Flush

My Ford dealer has just quoted me £170 for a service on my 06, 27000 mile tdci Mondeo. As I have nearly 2 years of warranty left I'll go with it. He asked if I wanted the engine flush treatment at £39. He said that this would help clean the residues out of the engine as well as cleaning the injectors. Is the treatment worth the extra or would I be better off spending my hard-earned on quality fuels like BP Ultimate diesel which I frequently buy anyway. All responses greatly appreciated.

The only fuel I use in our tow car is Shell V power diesel or BP Ultimate diesel, both of which have a higher cetane rating which means they burn hotter producing more power and less exhaust soot, they also help to keep injectors clean. personally I would stick to high cetane diesel to avoid residues rather than allow them to build up and then flush the engine. Give the BP fuel a try for a couple of tankfulls. The shell V Power diesel is currently only available in the South East but it is due to be rolled out nationwide later this year.

I'd go with Rob on this - modern oil is unlikley to have contaminated your engine by 27K and a can of redex injector cleaner or similar every few tankfulls will keep the injectors pristine.

I was put off flushing oil years ago with a Renault engine - the oil shifted some carbon which blocked the gallery to the oil pressure sender - I have heard of people having trouble with hydraulic tappets or lash adjusters too after having the engine flushed.

I would forget about the flush - in my experience will only damage yr engine last time I had it done my cam shaft started

to rattle. Unless they refill with oil and flush out again

still residues left in the engine.

I'd forget about flushing oil..only used it once and shortly after the big ends and mains blew...maybe the engine was exceptionally mucky and some of it blocked the oilways..even though the engine was regularly serviced and was very sweet before the flush.... I'll certainly never use it again

In 1990 we bought a 2.0 auto Primera new, our Nissan dealer serviced it every 6 months and always used flushing oil.As a second car used by my wife in 2004 she sold it , the mileage about 980000,the servicing being done yearly at the time, that engine was quite and in the 14 years having it we never ever put oil in it also water ,the dipstick had to be put at an angle to see how much was in it as it was always clear. So for me, flushing oil done properly in this instance was good for want of a better word.

I have had several cars go well over 120k and never had to resort to flushing. I use good qualty fuel (branded) and oil. Always change the oil after 6 months or 6k miles and for diesels I either use Ultimate or on my latest car have used Millers diesel additive. It works out at 50% the price of Ultimate. MPG is the same as with Ultimate.
