I said I would call back and report on our family expedition to Spain in our Mercedes people carrier.
Covered just over 3000 miles in 25 days, 4 adults and 3 young adults with twin axle caravan plus awning and two tents. Towing MPG dropped to 20/22 MPG on climbing roads and on long autoroute sections 27/29mpg. Over all around 23/24 to the gallon towing and that's with air con. Comfort was never an issue on the road and hills were a breeze. Tip style auto with cruise control is the way to go for motorway driving.
Thanks for the offer of a tow Frank but it never missed a beat. Performance solo and towing on road is better than our previous 4x4 and it left all bar an X5 (not carrying 7) on hills and we never needed or missed 4x4 drive.
If a large family needs to tow a large caravan and travel in spacious comfort a large people carrier could be the best option.
