It is time to replace my current towcar VW Touran 140 sport, I fancy changing to 4WD Suv on my list are the following cars.

X trail 173hp

VW Tiguan 170hp Sport

Peugot 4007 2.2 gti

Citreon C Crosser 2.2

The car will be towing my Bailey Ranger 620/6 mtpl 1540kgs.

I have decided to change to 4x4 because of my Touran is towing at nearly 100% when fully loaded, although I have had no problem having done two trips to Vendee region of France fully loaded.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Wayne.

Wayne between the Crosser and the Peugot 4007 the Outlander by Mitsubishi had the better write up, same car has the crosser and 4007 "only my opion", the Honda CRV has good report, l myself went in the end for the Daddie of all tow cars the good old Shogun, some cracking deals about on them, pick mine up this Friday now that's a tug.

From your list i would only be interested in the vw and the nissan, i am on my second xtrail, and am pleasantly surprised with the nissans renault engine, test drive both, the 173 xtrail is limited to 2200kg towing with a 100kg nose weight limit.

If i've got you vw tiguan correct it is quite shorter than the xtrail, the boot space was not big enough for my needs.

Gumbo might agree with you accept for the price of the land cruiser, colarado may be a better bet, l stuck with the one l know best good old shoggy.

Might sound & drive like a tractor as some say but l know it will outlast anything out their and tractors as well.

Hi

I have a 173 XT and am very happy with it - if you want to know anything specific?

Get up to 29 mpg towing 1300 kg, very comfortable, excellent driving position. Sat nav easy to operate, no quibbles at all.

You are all wrong the daddy of the tow cars is the Disco3 and I am sure that the newly released Disco4 will take that crown at the next Tow car of the year awards.

i have to agree with you gumbo, having just drove a 2 year old shogun down to the south west for a elderly friend i now believe the car is a "tug" literally, it wallows, pitches its noisy, and tiresome on long journeys and thirsty. why oh why does the car only have 5 forward gears ? (excluding low box) it would be so much better with 6 and really does need the extra cog. loads of toys for your money but appaling over long distances.

Disco ha! hope you have long pockets for all that goe's wrong, don't agree have had 3 Shoguns now never spent a penny on any other than service and new break shoes.

Last one for ten years only breakdown corroded fuel pipe last year, Hammer don't you agree you have one don't you.

Picked my new one up from Barnsley yesterday travelled over Woodhead and through Glossop over the Pennines to Whalley Bridge and on to Bollington near Macclesfield, returned 25MPH.

That's on small country lanes hilly roads, not bad for a 3.2 Auto.

If you live where l am every one drives Shogun or the Mitsubishi Raging Bull pick ups as they know they will start in winter and get you where you want to go, l rest my case.

NGH

Ps ask the mechanics around our area , p-ss-d of with them has they never go wrong.

if it only returned 25 MPH I would bin it straight away. My D3 will tow at the legal limit on motorways or u and down the side of hills and will still return 27 MPG. The other benefit is that it is like driving on a magic carpet. You can keep the Shoguns.

Thing is Russel l am being honest, not come across any 4x4 that can return 27MPH tight narrow country roads and hills of 1 in 5 maybe ther bowser my mate has to take with is Disco as he travels these roads continually.

Russell to our own you like your Disco l like me Shogun at the end of the day at least we are keeping the good old 4x4 fraternity going and to hell with Gordon Brown and is kronies and yes the disco is good 4x4 but the one my brother had must have been a Friday car as is hand was never out of is pocket.

As wayne hasn't got a "daddy" tow car on his list.

One can only assume that he's not interested in paying out more VED than necessary, nor adding to the oil companies already excessive profits, with low 20's MPG figures.

I my self prefer a more economical tow car, the xtrail returns 40mpg solo, and around 33mpg towing.(computer readings). Along with a VED group "J" (if i recall correctly), puts money in my pocket, not gordens.

Ray

The reason I am looking at this type of vehicle is the 30k solo miles that I t4ravel each year, thats why I am after something that will return around 40mpg solo.

Thanks for all the feedback.

For solo economy, the best SUVs are the CRV, Kuga (2 or 4WD) or the Tiguan. I also do circa 25k solo miles so solo economy is high on my list of priorities.

As my tug is only 1482 MTPLM I went for a Zafira 150 CDTi which I got when 8 months old for half the list price!!

If I had a higher cash limit I would consider one of the new Freelander Stop start models.

Hi Wayne,

I have no experience of it, but the Volvo XC60 looks pretty good in the showroom. Might be worth investigating further.

Cheers

Wayne,

Have you thought about a Hyundai Santa Fe. Looks nice, not too pricey, 32.5mpg towing. Had mine for a year now and my wife loves driving it.
