Ford Mondeo 2.0TDCI Zetec S 2004

I am considering buying the above car to tow my 2004 Buccaneer Elan 14. The caravan has a MTPLM of 1400Kgs. Any ideas if this car is up to the job, particularly interested if you own a Mondeo with a 2.0Ltr diesel engine(130).

Hi Andy,I own 53 plate tdci hatchback 130 bhp, superb tow car I presently have 1350 kg bailey pageant,no problem 60 plus, use cruise control and it cruises at that speed all day, scotland to cornwall and return 38 miles per gallon towing, solo in excess of 50 m,I,m changing van to sterling 1576 fully laden, bit on the heavy side for mondeo but freind asures me there will be no problem if loaded well,,,,hope this is of some help to you

To Alan, regarding andy's question, we own a 1994 2.0L Mondeo LX hatchback 136bhp, we have a Lunar Clubman 510-4 (1992)weight is 1150kgs, we are also uncertain if this is a good match, as we have not towed with this car yet. Liz

Hi Liz,

we have an older shape 1999 mondeo 2.0 petrol Ghia 136bhp and tow an avondale dart with a max weight of 1250kg. We do not have any problems maintaining pace (60mph-ish), the only thing is that you may need to use the gearbox on the steeper hills. We get 20 - 25 mpg towing depending upon the wind direction!

Cheers

I have the estate version, 1550k kerb weight, loaded for caravaning 1750k towing 1550k Vanmaster.Efortless towing up and down the hills of Wales. Computer says 46mph solo, 38mph towing. Does not like wet grass though.

To all,

Thankyou all mondeo owners, you have reassured us for when we tow our van. I feel more happier now. But it dosen't stop my hubby wanted a 4x4. Liz

i think some of you have your wires crossed here ,the old Mondeo is a completley differnt machine to the new common rail diesel ,the 136 BHP is a petrol unit and is much lighter ,the 130 BHP TDCI Estate is Diesel producing maximum torque at 1800 RPM ,and weighs in at 1550 Kg ,i also own a Nissan Terrano which i only use during the winter ,i get a lot more acceleration from the mondeo TDCI ,the Terrano is allways a gear behind and doing more revs ,its quite sluggish solo and probably due to its weight

Thanks guys and yes i agree with Joby my original question was directed at the 2.0 TDCI.Any more comments welcome.Sorry petrol heads!!!

Hi all, Just to let you know our mondeo towed our Lunar clubman ok no trouble at all, the only thing was we had to use our gear box slightly more up the hills, but apart from that no problems. Liz

I have the Mondeo 2.0 Titanium X Have no fears it is more than up to the job.

I have the Avondale Osprey slightly heavier than yours , hardly know its on the back sometimes.

Richard.
