FREELANDER CYCLE RACK

I want to get the weight of 2 x 15Kg mountain bikes out of the caravan onto a spare wheel rack of a Land Rover Freelander [06] TD4.

The apprehension is that such a carrier might foul the 'high rise'rear light of the Freelander. Has anybody any experience, or can suggets a solution?

For everal reasons, I do not want a towbar mounted carrier

Hi Colin ,

I tried a spre wheel carrier from Halfords some time ago on the wifes Freebie and it wasn't right. It wouldn't fit due to the tail light.

However I vaguely remember that there is one that would but I really cant remember the details now , other than I think the top part of the frame was narrower than the bottom , sort of triangular I guess.

The other option I looked at was the type that fix actually to the spare wheel , or at least the fixings for the spare. They look like 2 prongs coming out from the spare.

My only concearn was the bikes clearly hang lower and possibly could fould the bumper.

Hi Colin, I looked at these when I had a Freelander but was put off the idea because I felt it would cut down the distance between the car and the van so much, I felt there was a danger of jacknifing the bikes into the van when turning a tight corner

Hi colin

I have 2005 TD4 freelander and have had the same problem and have been looking for a long time for bike rack. But every one goes to far back because of the spare wheel on the back door and will foul when towing. So I have gone for putting them on the roof of the car.

Thanks to all for some really useful comment and advice.

This morning, I spoke to the engineers at a big dealer. They have fited many carriers, inc to Freelanders and endorse the apprehension about door hinges.

They prefer the Witter model, listed on the website as being Freelander suitable.

I am going in for a viewing and consultation of Friday. It should be interesting to discuss it with the experts.
