Hi all, a friend of ours tows with a freelander 1.9tdi but is having problems with power. When he goes up hill the revs seem to drop from around 3500 to 2000 and he has to struggle. He is towing at 90% so weight isn't really an issue. Has anyone got any answers to this problem. Thanks, Helen.

A common fault with these is a leak on the turbo hose. With your foot hard down you will probably see clouds of black smoke.

Which engine has you friend got?
Both diesels fitted to the freelander were classed as 2 litres, the early one a development of the one fitted to the Montego/Maestro (co-developed with Perkins I believe) which made more noise than power and struggled to perceptively move the car let alone a caravan on tow.
The later BMW unit is far more refined and has a much better reputation, although if it`s towing a caravan loaded to 90% it may still not be a ball of fire as its output isn`t huge and the total power to weight ratio won`t be brilliant.
Perchance your friends level of expectancy is unreasonably high?

Well Helen as your friend is towing 90% i would think the only problem is he is towing close to his max and the car is just struggling uphill, lets be honest the freelander is not exactly a power dream more of a .et dream.
Sometimes people can forget the pre-turbo diesel days of having to change down on almost every incline. If you're towing a fair weight and there is a significant slope up ahead, it pays to change down at about 2500 rpm or higher to keep the revs up. To be honest, if you're going uphill at 2000 rpm then - unless it's a VW Toureg or Landcruiser - you'll be losing it and will struggle.

We had a similiar problem with out Freelander TD4 Diesel,it went wrong on us last year in Woolacombe. It ended up being an airflow meter. It was struggling pulling at all, even without a Caravan on. We had it replaced whilst away and it was like driving a different vehicle. However it cost

Hi Helen, tell your friend to get rid of the Freelander, even if it is the TD4 model. I had one and it was nothing but trouble.
Those that say they haven't had any issues with them - it's only a matter of time!

stephen, Disagree I have done 60,000 miles in mine and apart from the Airflow metre and tyres it has cost nothing.Hi Helen, tell your friend to get rid of the Freelander, even if it is the TD4 model. I had one and it was nothing but trouble.

If they are that bad how come they are one of the most popular 4 x 4's out there ? Even the press think they are good.

we tow with our freelander TD4 bmw engine. It tows like a dream and half the time you forget you're actually towing a caravan.
We've had our freelander since 6 months old and aside from a couple minor hiccups (windscreen wiper arm and auxillary belt) we've had no problems at all with it and its been a very good and reliable car with good mpg.
With regards to towing and loss of power, like the other posters said my husband commented the 90% match and not changing down gear probably has a lot to do with it and also he said you do have to "read the road" when towing which helps !!

Our Land Rover experiences have not been the best as James has said here.
Yesterdays newspapers had the latest Which car reliability report details. Ford were the only European maker in the top ten all the other being asian manufacturers with Honda Top for both Cars and 4 X 4's.
Land Rover came at the bottom again following another recent reliabilty report with the same results. As SUV drivers at times Land Rover drivers pick fault in our present choice, but we have the reliabilty that LR never gave us and now the company is up for sale again I see.

ria, I am on my 2nd Honda CRV and can understand why they are amongst the most reliable manufacturers. I have done over 100,000 combined in both vehicles and never neede anything other that routine servicing.
They are British built though so there is obviously nothing wrong with the Honda UK work force. perhaps the upper management of land Rover are to blame for their ills?

Joby,Hi Tim we had exactly the same thing wrong with our terrano ,it was hard to get up any speed towing ,it was ok solo ,we took it to a few small garages each came out with a different remedy ,so in the end we took it to a garage and had it plugged into the computer ,and it was the airflow meter ,it felt like a completely different car ,when we got it back
It was costly to sort out, however probably like yours the difference in performance softened the blow a little bit !!
